DOOM
DOOM 2016 Controls
I recently bought & downloaded Doom 2016. It's especially exciting for me because I played the original, first Doom constantly when it first came out back in the 90s. And this remake is a more than worthy update. But I would like to know if anyone has any particular way that they have set up the controls that may be better than the default settings. I have a gaming mouse with thumb buttons (I love thumb buttons on a mouse; so handy). I don't really like that the "glory kill" button is the F key & I was thinking of doing something like making one of the thumb buttons the glory kill button. Or making the right mouse button the glory kill button & changing the mod to a thumb button. Any thoughts about this are welcome. I just want to totally maximise my demon slaying experience. Thanks.

I used my thumb buttons to bind the "change mod" key so that you can switch between gun mods on the fly, allowing for somewhat more fluid play. Other than that, the base controls seem pretty tight and well designed. You could also bind the grenade to a thumb button, I suppose.

Both of those binds would keep your hand on or closer to the movement keys so you wouldn't have to stretch your hands as far.
That sounds great, thanks. I still haven't properly started the game. I've only played the starting section. I didn't even get up to any point with grenades. Really, I just wanted the "glory kill" button to be one of the mouse buttons.

The 'glory kill' action is a melee option, so having it bound to 'f' is really just natural for me. Since it's a melee finisher attack, I just left it alone. Using 'r' to change gun mods is sorta-kinda like 'reloading' the weapon with a different mod, so that stayed the same for me.

But that F1/F2 combo to change back and forth between the 2 grenade types? Sheesh. That's what I rebound to my 2 mouse buttons.

Other than that, everything else stayed the same; I liked the default layout a lot.
Hey, thanks, I really appreciate all suggestions like that. I'm really still fairly new to modern gaming. I was majorly into computers & gaming, ironically when the very first Doom came out in the early 90s & I just lost touch with it all for a long time until just recently. So I appreciate everyone's experience. And Doom has a special personal significance for me. I played it constantly as a kid

You're in for a treat then, because I've followed it since its inception in the '90s, and this game is the closest thing to original Doom in terms of kick-assery-goodness. It feels like the original, but looks and plays like a modern day game. I'm referring to the intense gameplay and the level designs with the secret areas and such. ENJOY!

MMO mouse ? how aren't these standard for gaming?

I use a corsair scimitar (gdi best mouse ever fk razer), so much easier to swap between weapons.... and controls are so simple, auto run, F to melee ♥♥♥♥, didnt felt the need to mess with anything.

I don't like having a bunch of extra things to accidentally bump on my mouse, personally. I don't like any extra buttons on there.

Even in MMOs, most of those have built in macro systems, or at least macros aren't generally frowned up like in other genres, so I've never felt MMO mice filled a personal need for me.

That said, I can see the appeal of you are more coordinated than myself with your right hand.
Yeah, I had no idea there was a new Doom game until the other day. I saw a 5 minute video of gameplay from it & I instantly thought, "Shut up & take my money!!!"

Like you Dave, I was there in the beginning... damn, I was astonished enough when 'Catacomb 3D' (id's second 3D title and precursor to Wolf3D and DooM) first came out and showed us the wonder of texture-mapped RPG and the approaching gankfest to come... >;}

Of course, back then the only options we had were to use the arrow keys or WASD (since one of those usually got hard-coded into a game back then). Nowadays we require more freedom, so I switched 1 key right to ESDF and opened up a lot more options for less finger strain (especially since I have very small hands), so all of my essentials are in easy reach without ever moving my left hand. I switch between a basic 5-button gaming mouse and my trusty original-edition WoW MMO; either way, my Glory Kill button is button 4 - easy to hit quick on purpose, never in the way when frantic.

The first game to ship with WASD was Quake 2, and that wasn't enabled by default.

True enough, but let's face it, people have been using WASD since way before that (hell, I played DooM, Duke3D, even the Quake1 deathmatch test (at Uni with my mates on the computer lab's LAN during study periods :P ) with WASD. And I'm fairly sure I vaguely recall a few odd shareware titles that had it. WASD was not unique to Quake2 in the mid '90's, no matter what the interweebs try to tell you.
Great suggestions, thanks. And it's so great to see other people for whom those early, golden days of the first great FPSs mean as much as they meant to me. As I mentioned, I did just happen to drift away from gaming for a long time but I have been having the best time returning to it. Now that I look back, I don't know how I did drift away from it. And all the new options & possibilities with controls (& with everything really) just makes in all even more awesome!
This is a weird little point but I love that everyone still calls the character "Doom Guy". That's just awesome

Mouse 5 glory. Mouse 4 use, Q rocket, X shotgun, R rail/gause, E plasma, F super shotgun, G assault rifle, T BFG, Z MCG

I use my old Quake 3/Live keys, works great.
