The order is what you think it is.
Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 3, Doom 2016.
That said, the story has minor references\hints at some past titles, but the story itself stands on its own - but it's not the game's focus by any means. It's a simplistic story to fit the chaotic gameplay.
that. honest question here mr OP, why the hell did you think doom has a story?
Big corporation can't help itself and messes around with hell, demons invade and one marine fights them off even traveling into hell to kill them some more, This is the story for every game.
OP: You don't need to play in any order as there is no real overarching story. I'd play a little Doom 1/2 before diving in to this as you'd be able to better understand just how good this reboot is.
Besides, The storyline is not as shiny as you may be expecting.
"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy…"
for the better.
Doom 4 is a reboot of the first Doom. It tells a new story unrelated to the other games. You can play this one first.
The question was "What DOOM game to play first to understand the story".
We did answer his question.
