The order is what you think it is.

Doom 1, Doom 2, Doom 3, Doom 2016.
Story?

If you're going to play DOOM for the story, I suggest you make a U-turn at your earliest convenience.
That said, the story has minor references\hints at some past titles, but the story itself stands on its own - but it's not the game's focus by any means. It's a simplistic story to fit the chaotic gameplay.

It wouldn't matter the story is just there for the sake of being there.

that. honest question here mr OP, why the hell did you think doom has a story?

I will summarize the story for you.

Big corporation can't help itself and messes around with hell, demons invade and one marine fights them off even traveling into hell to kill them some more, This is the story for every game.

Doom 1 / 3 - > Doom 2 - > Doom 64 -> Doom 2016. For chronological order, anyway, but there is no real story continuity.

Here's a quote from one of the original developers.

I'm not saying skip Doom 3 entirely... I'm just saying it should be played on it's own at a later date and after forgetting the fact that it shares the name.

OP: You don't need to play in any order as there is no real overarching story. I'd play a little Doom 1/2 before diving in to this as you'd be able to better understand just how good this reboot is.

Uh, what ? this game's story has no relation to it's predecessors, It's a reboot with an all new storyline, you don't need to play previous ones to understand the new one.

Besides, The storyline is not as shiny as you may be expecting.

Doom is not like

"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. Pursued by the Empire’s sinister agents, Princess Leia races home aboard her starship, custodian of the stolen plans that can save her people and restore freedom to the galaxy…"

for the better.

The story for Star Wars has always been basic as all hell. That's an extremely poor example and not even remotely related to anything at all.

Since nobody has answered the question...

Doom 4 is a reboot of the first Doom. It tells a new story unrelated to the other games. You can play this one first.
