Stuttering after installing a new CPU
Not sure if anyone will be able to help here and if I screwed something up, but here goes. I just installed a new processor on my PC not two hours ago, an i5 4690k. My GPU is a 1060 6GB and up until yesterday I had a meager little i3. Thing is, ever since I installed my new processor, I'm getting weird stuttering issues where my framerate fluctuates rather wildly. I'm playing with vsync on, so maybe that's it (my screen is 60hz only)? In any case, I'm not really sure what to do. Has anyone else had a similar issue?

That board does support that CPU. Just the fact that it posts and boots the OS proves that.

Stuttering issues in the game are not necessarily any indication that there is a compatibility issue between the board and the CPU.

Are there stuttering issues in any other games?

Also, buying a prebuilt, having problems with it, then having to roll your sleeves up and get your hands dirty is basically everyones first step into learning about PC hardware and building. Just par for the course

its just id's shoddy coding, and trying to compensate for different monitors and panels having different response times, id had stuttering in the vulkan demo video when it went over 200fps

so you use adaptive v-sync before trying anything else

He stated that he's also having the same issue in other games that previously ran good before changing his processor.

EDIT: It's working now. Getting off dust and excess cooling paste helped. I feel like an idiot.
Assuming if your mobo does support you new cpu, you mentioned about having to clean out the dust and excess thermal paste.... Did you make sure it was clean when you installed the new cpu? Could have been that your cpu fan or cooler was not making good contact with the cpu to properly keep the temperatures down. Thats why its always good to use some type of temp monitoring software just to make sure its not it not running hot. I use Real Temp software since its pretty straightforward and simple to use.

I did try running the game without vsync and in adaptive vsync, same results. I would get up to 200fps and it would constantly dip to 40~30 every 3 or so seconds even when idle.

I'll keep that in mind since I'm using my old one now. Kinda scared of using my new CPU just to check whether it was just an issue with dust and excess paste or the heatsink. Although, I would assume that since it would shut down, then boot every time I turned on my PC with the 4690k, it's probably not entirely compatible.

Ok, but just FYI a pc shutdown without a blue screen(bsod) is one symptom of the cpu overheating. It's basically a security feature to prevent damage to the cpu.

Those boards are not designed with upgrading in mind. Even though the socket might be the same, its possible the bios doesnt support firmware to recognize the i5 since it didnt ship with it/ came with a later revision, or the power dillivery isnt clean enough to support the I5s greater demand.

You can check your version of the firmware in the bios and then look at the manufacture's site for a possible upgrade. Flashing your bios should only be done when needed though so make sure you actually read the release notes for any bios upgrades for your board. Other than that, you're ♥♥♥♥ out of luck. A real shame cause the 4690k is a beautiful CPU. Has the 4rth fastest single thread time to date, even more than the skylakes / 2011 1151 sockets. I would save up for a decent board.

Just curious, how many watts is your power supply? Although an i3 to an i5 recommended psu requirements isn't too much of a difference it doesnt hurt to rule everything out. Also did your xps ship with a GeForce 1060 or did you upgrade that too?

Well... I guess StBean was right after all. After dusting the cooler and removing excess paste from the i5... it worked. It still reset before booting, but now the CPU is actually running at full capacity. No stuttering. Nothing. Even a benchmark test showed excellent results.

Do I feel like the biggest moron on the planet? Yes. Absolutely. Ugh

My PSU is 500w. I imagine it's just enough, but could be better. And yes, it came with a 960 2gb, which I upgraded not too long ago after I didn't like its results.

God, I feel like an ass. This was truly a learning experience though. I mean... damn >__>

Ahhh I read. Intel put some poop under my CPU. I got block of wood, put the CPU in a vice and hit it with a hammer. BANG. SMashed it in half. No, I was planning on replacing the poop with some goop, but I miught wait on that next mobo and CPU before blocking off the heatspreader and putting some decent goop instaed of poop.

In the meantime I just put like a huge behemoth on there. I was going to put a better behemoth, but the man didn't put it in the van and left it with Stan at the Lan, so I can't fit my ubute RAM where I planned. Now thay made the behemoth better man and you can fit the RAM, but only if you plan.

Lol stop putting yourself down over this. Most of us went through pc upgrading/building issues. You fixed it in a day and learned a lot doing it. Now building your next system will actually be fun.

I just totaly broke mine one day. It was dad's fault. Something about water pipes and digging trenches through them for phone lines that go no where near his precious water pipes. So I just threw it off the veranda, cause like he was really winding me up and never paid me for all the pyhsical labour bloody digging trenches that normal people use machinery for. No money in computers hey dad? Take a look inside for yourself then. lol

I've electric shocked myself and I am qualified to work with electricity, 3 times. Unfortunately someone turned off the power twice, and the third time they hip and shouldered me off the line so we both didn't fry.

If you cut the power cord off faulty electrical aplliances, check twice it's unplugged and the power is off, just in case your choppers are not insulated, otherwise it welds the cutting edges together. ZZZZ Also remove fuses from the fuse box (meter box) before climbing in the ceiling or playing with wires, power switches don't always work.

You're right. Well, it was a bit of a wild right and I'm happy to be able to play my game at 60+ fps again, haha :D Maybe in a few years I'll replace this mobo, but for now, I appreciate all the help! Seriously, thanks!

No idea why you would do that since the bios controls that not the OS. The OS will recognize any new CPU on the fly with no issues, no chipset drivers needed, that's only for the motherboard.
