Thoughts on Doom 3?
I know Doom 3 has always been sort of a weird game with the Doom community. Some love it, some hate it. Some of my thoughts on it since I've been playing the BFG Edition lately:

The atmosphere. They actually did a really good job of nailing a lonely, oppressive atmosphere in Doom 3. The moody lighting and the cold, metallic textures make you feel like you're a lone marine millions of miles from Earth, fighting an alien invasion by yourself.

The guns. For some reason, when I played Doom 3 years ago on Xbox, I remember the guns feeling wimpy. Maybe that was something they improved with the BFG Edition, but the guns feel nice and punchy. The shotgun in particular has a nice, loud *BANG* (although it annoys that Doom 3 started doing the whole "you can't hit anything with the pump shotgun unless you're literally in arms reach" thing).

I think the biggest let down in the game for me is the difficulty. Even on veteran, I don't feel like I have to try very hard to stay alive. I'm hoovering up combat armors and medkits when my armor level is like 121/125 and my health is 91/100. Actually, that's something odd I've noticed. Was armor always this durable in Doom 3? Sure seems like you never run out of the stuff, no matter how much of a beating you take in combat.

Speaking of combat, the enemies don't feel particularly threatening, either. They have an annoying tendency to throw out a single attack and then just stand there gawking at you while you pump them full of lead. It actually makes me wonder how much more tense the combat in Doom 3 would be if it had Doom 2016's more aggressive enemies. Imagine how tense that first encounter with the pinkie would be if it bull charged directly at you as soon as it saw you, or how you'd need to be quick on your feet and able to think on the spot while dodging imp fireballs and melee attacks in a tight corridor. The thing is, in Doom 3 I don't feel unstoppable because I'm too fast or skilled for the enemies to hit me; I feel like I'm unstoppable because I'm just too overpowered for anything to pose much of a threat.

So it's a mixed bag for me, but I'm looking forward to finishing the rest of the main campaign and seeing what Resurrection of Evil and Lost Mission have in store.

It was a great tech demo and horror game, but a pretty boring Doom game.

I wish I could find some kind of hub for DOOM 3 maps :(

I don't know where to look, and I really hope to find quality ones that feel like the classic games in that they provide new experiences in new places unlike the base game (like how Brutal DOOM has an episode that takes place in LA)
Nobody seems to have an interest in modding Doom 3. Same with Rage. This seems to be the reason why they refrained from making Doom (2016) modable, and developed Snapmap instead.
SnapMap was likely the best they could do under the circumstances, and I think it's managed to pay off, especially after all the content updates.

Doom 3 is the only FPS game I didn't finish. I was at the final boss and said, "I don't care about this, let's do something else".

Doom 3 was a good game, it was just not a "DOOM" game. I consider it to be a spinoff

I also recommend The Lost Mission, it's short, but fun
