Go to users\%username\saved games\id software\doom\base\ and delete doomconfig.local.
The game will then recreate the file and use default settings.
If you still have problem let me know. Just to be sure. You do have the latest drivers installed for your GTX 1070 right ?
Your GTX 1070 should be playing this game at ultra on Vulkan without any problems at 100+fps.
I've been trying to use Vulkan, but when it restarts the game to apply the setting, it crashes. I lowered the advanced video settings to high but it always crashes.
My GPU drivers are up to date.
You can do that by going to Steam -> Click on help up there -> System information -> Cut and paste it here.
Can you please tell me how you update your drivers ? Do you use Geforce Experience or do you manually install your drivers by going to the website, downloading it and using the windows add/remove programs to uninstall the one you have.
OpenGL works fine by the way.

One thing for sure is that Geforce Experience is not a good software to keep on your system lately. The only good thing about it is Shadowplay that let you record. If you do not use that function please remove that program. The optimization is useless. What it does is change the "ingame" settings for the game outside of the game. You can easily set the graphics options inside the game. I really recommend you do uninstall Geforce Experience but not yet.
I see that you have an Intel HD 630 integrated graphics. Just to be sure. In your Nvidia control panel -> 3D settings. Make sure that the global profile or the game profile if you use one that it is set to "High Performance NVIDIA processor" and not your Intel HD IGPU.
Let's be 100% sure that the problem isn't coming from Geforce Experience crappy way of updating the drivers and screwing things up for some people. Follow these steps below.
- Download this - http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/126179/en-us
- Go to Windows ADD/REMOVE programs. Uninstall "Nvidia display drivers".
- Reboot.
- Install the new drivers. Choose "Display drivers" and "Physicx" only in the custom installation package (No Geforce Experience) and you can click on "Perform a clean installation". Just be sure that you go to your Nvidia control panel after reinstalling the drivers and make sure that the 3D settings is still on "High performance Nvidia Processor" and not your Intel HD. Since everything is reset to default by doing this.
- Reboot.
This is the proper way to install your drivers. There is one thing that can be tried and it is to use a program called DDU (Display drivers uninstaller). What it does is remove any older files related to older drivers you installed that left files behind and could cause a problem for you. If reinstalling your drivers the proper way didn't work i will let you know how to do it with DDU.
Do not worry about DDU. The program is suggested by experts and is even in a pinned thread in the official Nvidia forum.
EDIT : Please update your intel HD 630 graphics too. Here is the link and you can update it after you updated the other drivers. Just be sure its still at "high performance Nvidia processor" after the update of this one. No need to uninstall anything for this one. Just install the drivers after the last reboot of the other drivers update. Reboot after installing this one too.

I wonder what it is about vulkan that the laptop can't handle?
Thank you for taking the time to help. I appreciate it.
That is very weird. When you install the Nvidia drivers package it install everything you need for Vulkan. The fact that you were missing a vulkan dll even after reinstalling the drivers is not normal.
You didnt try reinstalling your drivers with DDU right ? That should have worked because that DLL is included inside that drivers.
I thought the same thing. So weird that it didn't include it. I never used the DDU. I clicked on the Nvidia driver link you gave me, downloaded it, installed only the display drivers and PhysX, and did a clean installation.
In the Youtube comments, its obvious that this has happened to many people. By copying the vulkan dll into the Doom folder, it has solved many people's problems.
