And 78GB is big yes but not unique. Lots of games takes around this size or even more.
The game is heavily compressed. The game uncompressed would easily be over 3 Terrabytes in size, no exaggeration. It has multiple megatextures , these are giant textures that cover an entire map and they each are 256GB in size... not to mention the games audio is lossless.
But they did a great job in the game size compression. To squeeze terabytes of data down to only 78GB without performance issues from unpacking on the fly , is a freaking miracle.
But I guess yeah its annoying for people with slower Internet connections. But for most it's no issue i think. Too me under 30 mins to download on my previous connection which was fibre optik 150 down and 150 up. Now I have 1terrabyte down and 150up fibre optikea connection. Takes me even less time lol.
But 3 Terrabytes sounds a bit much, where do you get that info?
RAGE uncompressed was just over 1 Terrabyte as confirmed by idtech lead developer John Carmack. DOOM contains much larger assets and higher resolution megatextures (16k x 8k . And again each being 256gb in size. Thats textures alone, sounds, shadows, actual assets are a different story) than Rage so it's safe to assume it's at least 3 TB uncompressed.
I think it could be even bigger.
At 330KBps its like 65 hours.
