Alt key causes game to 'freezeframe' until another key is pressed.

So, traditionally I use L-Alt to crouch and I noticed in KCD that it causes the game to halt- audio still plays (like cutscenes) but it seems like it just pauses the game unless I press another key (which prompts a windows chime to happen). I am playing in windowed (not borderless) mode and I've never run into this in other games. I tried searching and it was either not hard enough or I might be an idiot.

The windows key works fine but both alt keys so this hang where the game will not continue unless I press another key. Needless to say I've been tripping over myself trying to use alt to crouch (just binding it was a nightmare, I thought it might be a conflicting binding or something).

Windows 10 for what that might be worth.
