I THINK you could either: Move a lot away from the horse and wait, to see if the horse will be spawned back to his original position. Or of course, reload a previous save.
Its timed side quest with an interesting possible ending. Did you try the other option then? Moving a lot away from the horse and wait a few hours plus reloading the game (not sure how It would help?) to see if It will spawn back to its original position near the horse trader.
Wait, wait, wait. I am only used to Skyrim commands, but maybe this game could have a devmode which you can teleport the horse to yourself. (Every character in the game usually have its on ID) if you are up to search about this possibility of course.
quick google: You need to enable cheat mode. Find the roan's ID. Then use a teleport command to that ID to your position. Its either 10min googling how-to and doing that, or really playing the old save then.
