I like the KCD1 combat system and i like this official response.
ur guess is as good as mine ? ...
... oh wait.. no probably not ...
so, there's some original KCD game development discussions about the developers hopes and dreams for the KCD combat system (the KCD final version fell short)
these original discussions about the combat system should provide all the information we need to make a fairly well educated guess (with many confirmations from the video)
All the same, KCD2 better fix that soft lock mechanic, Atleast the implementation of it.
Might be worth checking out the video frame by frame.. But especially to wait for a walkthrough when the game is out, to get an idea of whether those 2 refund hours are enough to force through the story walls and actually try the combat system
______
If they drastically change it, guess what, a lot of people who enjoyed the combat in KCD1 will be upset too!
the bulk of the answer for the OP is that we don't know if it will be "better",
especially when we all know "better" is subjective (to our own standards) and open to argument
what we do know, from the dev's own mouths (in the various videos), KCD 2 combat uses the same general construct and mechanics as *their original plan* for KCD (1)
however, according to the developer, several (many?) improvements have made, and they quickly described the most noticeable changes - 4-pointed star instead of 5-pointed star (or whatever), and some other minor mechanical changes (???)
more importanly, the developers alluded to their "original" design ideas that were not fully, or properly, implemented in KCD (1) - these changes are the ones they are still (sort of) hiding
for example, originally KCD combat was suppsoed to have a strong directional dependence, (as the training dialogue with Bernard suggests), but this mechanic and a few others were effectively "turned down or turned off" because, believe it or not, the combat was even more janky.
the dev also described evolving the Reputation system in a way that sounded like they didn't change anything, but there's now more Reputation dependence in worldly interactions
it seems the developers are quite confident they've mastered the game code well enough that they will completely stun us all with their brilliance
they did a good job with KCD (1) - there's nothing else like it - and i look forward to the next
"Subjective", right. Thing is, there's NOTHING good, with Henry being possessed by that soft lock mechanic, to be tossed and turned arround despite not even being in grab distance of his enemies.
But yes, improvements on the rpg/interaction elements is always welcome. Reputation would be a great thing to expand on.
Hopefully First Aid in KCD2 allows us to patch up anyone who is mortally injured, even in randomized skirmishes. For Reputaton, but allso with interesting dialogue options to follow, like the revealing of a cache location or even a brief training session in a random skill.
