Question with save files
How many save files does the game store before it overwrites? I used to manually delete autosaves, checkpoints and potion hard saves before ending the play-session because it became so bloated, but if they start to overwrite after a certain number of them then I will just let them do their thing. I seem to get mixed answers, most of them for console versions when searching, so if anyone knows the exact numbers, or a way to limit them in-game without me manually deleting, I would be ever so greatful. Thanks.

(edit: in addition, there are multiple sources of saves, like autosaves or manual saves.)

The limit to permanent saves is something like 12 ? i think this is what Schnapps creates for some incredibly stupid reason. (manual saves)

The temporary saves can go to 100 before they start over-writing. these are normally created by sleep/save & major quest progress points - "autosaves"

The normal in-game save features are simply terrible, imo, so i use a mod that allows you to save at any time AND select which type of save you are creating.

now, i never use schnapps anymore, and i created a specific purpose for each type of save.

i use "permanent" saves for significant story points - like just before picking up the Ale in the Skalitz Epilogue, which allows me to easily return to Skalitz and try other stuff, or arriving at the Mill in Rattay (and after getting the ring for Peschek)

i use the temporary, rolling 100 saves, for general activity - and i can always jump back a few saves if i am unhappy with the current story path Henry is taking (or something gets buggy).

take a look at the files in ur game save "playline" directories - and note that you can copy saves to another playline directory without issue (assuming it's empty) - and re-start the game from there, in the new playline (just remember the "n-1" relation)

"autosave###.whs" are temporary (generally)
"save###.whs" are permanent (generally)

I don't know what the number is, but there is definitely a limit and then old saves just start disappearing, so don't worry about it, you won't get infinite saves.
My save folder has 123 files in it now.
My first playline has 142.

permanent saves are normally the starts of major quests.

And here I thought I wouldn't get an answer, but not only did I get an answer, also suggestions and references. I mean this is a good showcase to the good will of this community! This is some really useful information, so thanks both of you! I greatly appreciate it, truly.

So I am using a quicksave mod and I noticed that save games all end in 3 numbers. I only got thru the prolouge and already am up to 075.

the quicksave mod uses the "sleep slots" , and i tested that quicksaveing and sleeping creates the same type of file "autosave###". also in-game, the saves have the little numbers like 075, and all saves seem to increase that number.

what happens when it gets to 999? I fear that my compulsatory saving may cause an issue here. is the game going to stop saving after i have saved 999 timess?

i tried deleting all the saves and saving thinking it may go back to 001, it did not. It remembered.

anyone in this thread know anything about that?

Maybe Using steam cloud saves, or M$ onedrive? That tends to do sh!t like that, overwriting client folder. Just disable both. On all the game forums I frequest there is a thread where cloud saves became corrupt - "convenience" just isn't worth it.

the game will automatically add another character to the filename (in the form of a decimal digit) to indicate the "thousand" position.

the save file numbering is determined as "(one higher than the highest save file number in the current directory)". (it is the most infallible way to determine a number that will not overwrite an existing file.)

and, as a note, i do have these "autosave" save files numbering well over 1000 - one of my permanent saves from before leaving Skalitz prologue is: "save1304.whs"

... but i save lots (early and often)

THANK YOU for confirming you have a save in the 1000s.

OK this is great news for me. I cannot seem to get the game to reset the savegame filename count back to 001, even if I use the tricks I see online about deleting all saves and then saving, it just somehow remembers what the number it was up to was.

I was afraid at 999 the game wouldn't be able to handle saving, I also found threads from 2018 saying ppl couldn't save after hitting only 300 (im already at 120 very very early just woke up and started theresa's campaign)

If it figures out how to go into the thousands than I should be safe.

I assume by 2023 that 300 save limit isn't a thing? I only saw like 2 threads mention it from 2018 and the mod I use has 20,000 downloads so I would assume more people would have created threads if it was a problem.

I also press f5 like a madman. I was thinking I was going to have to create a new playline and then copy my most recent save there, and then save in the new playline to see if that would reset the count, but I don't know if it even would. Assuming the number at least goes to save9999 before it has a problem I should be able to finish the game before doing that.
