Think it's also the main reason why my stealth is usually 20, and all other combat skills remain below 8. Player skill is pointless if your in-games skill point are to low. You are not allowed to fight as you would like, the game just blocks everything. Depending on who you're fighting, bump into them, kick, poke them in the face.
For me the worst thing about combat (game in general) are the camera movements, and how your character automatically positions itself, usually not in the direction you want. For their next game they should hire someone from the film industry and ask why they spend millions on stability systems. Being pushed over is fine, just keep the camera pointing in the same direction as it was, more or less.
Might try controller later on tho, just for the vibration.
One thing I have noticed by watching people play with a mouse is that they don't lock the camera, so whenever they change stance, their camera moves all over the place. This definitely looks like it makes things harder.
Also, the combat animations are meant to be clunky in the beginning. As you raise your Warfare skill, the combat will become smoother and faster.
I do not like the combat either, definitely too clunky (but I use KBM...), but, once I (and Henry) became comfortable with weapons and play style, 3+ enemies were a challenge but beaten regularly. You need to think outside the box more, be tactical with surroundings, use doorways, fences, etc, and sometimes the sword is not the best weapon to use.
Maybe you bring too many other games and expectations with you into KCD? Are you trying to fight toe-to-toe like an epic hero? Adapt, succeed, enjoy.
But yes, the camera lock is terrible, seems to be coded as part of the combat mechanic allowing directional strike on target body parts and armour covering. Directional strike without camera lock was possible with Mount and Blade (and others) but do not think target body parts specifically focused damage.
Combat is just completely unbalanced at times and whatever you try to do, the game won't let you. The dagger will always outperform any other weapon, it's basically is one hit kill. Which makes stealth totally overpowered, not to mention sneaking around at night with a torch, but they can't see you. Realistic right, plenty of room for improvements.
