Keep waking sleeping NPCs
I'm trying to get a sword early doors having just woken up in Rattay, and apparently the Executioner has one in his chest while he sleeps. Problem is as I approach the chest he always wakes up.

My noise level is 0 and I've got visibility down to about 42 as low as I can get right now. Surely I should be able to sneak without disturbing NPCS who are asleep?

This also happens when I try and do the Vagabond quest (stealing 50 coins from a sleeping guard). Him and the person near just wake up when I come within 5 feet of them.

Is the visibility too high still? Why can they see me when they are sleeping? What is the point of noise level being 0?

Is there an early game sword easier to get to than the executioners? I don't want to strangle or kill any named npc ftr.

Low noise, visibility, etc is all good, but without "skill" Henry is not always quiet

p.s.

a great early short sword is the Shard that is free on the ground in Skalitz - add a shield, (from any blacksmith), and Henry is ready for the first few quests

Were you crouching or walking at the moment you tried? It makes some difference. Also only with higher lockpick level you can make less noise while attempting to unlock chest.

I'm crouching. I don't even get to the point of lockpicking though, the executioner and the guard wake up just when I am 5 or 6 feet away from them.

There's an option to talk to the executioner and make up an excuse in order to make him leave the house and talk to the miller. You could try that or wait for him to wake up and move a bit far away from the chest. They can hear or see from some considerable distance.

Doesn't he take his sword with him when he leaves the house?

I don't remember this, but if he does, you can knockout him and take the sword, he will get conscious after some time.

Pretty sure he has dogs that will bark when you get near alerting him. I'm told you can drop meat to distract them, but I have not personally tried this
Weapons are not hard to come by, or at least, no in my experience. That being said, yes people can wake up randomly, though having high stealth and 0 noise helps.

In case it hasnt been mentioned: In most cases, it's quite easy to sneak up to sleeping person and to knock them out, so they dont wake up while Henry is rummaging about. Also, KO'ing people gives Stealth Skill exp. I hate to practice it on civilians, but it seems like there's not much for options out there

I'm going to presume knocking people out lowers your rep in the towns? I'm trying to keep rep as high as possible.

I found a few swords in the tower near the church at Rattay, have put them in chest to wait until they lose the stolen status.

I might end up just buying a sword though as I've started to get money from hunting.

The crime system in KCD1 isn't that robust. There are people who just knock everyone out while everyone is asleep to steal everything.
Because even pickpocketing a sleeping person at low level is hard. So knocking out sleeping people is free xp.

Yeah I think that's right. The dogs are OP in this game and will start barking at you through walls, alerting whoever is around. It's really annoying in Rattay, which seems to have a dog next to almost every house.

You will need to get a lot of Groschen and buy one, or fight bandits. There are few near Sausau (NE) that have very good items. But chances are you won't survive unless you are pretty good at combat without having the required skills. If you don't want to choke or kill anyone you are restricting yourself and find other ways. Invest a lot of time in speech.

If you go out to steal the ring for Peshek you have to go to the executioner' house. Best to go to there is between 3-4am. Then he and his dogs are all sleeping. If you want to get his sword is to choke him. Then you can take whatever you want and lock pick chests, or use the executioner' keys. If I am not mistaken his sword is in his inventory, not in a chest.
Unless it got bugged somehow, reputation is a secondary stat and usually doesnt matter in the long run. As long as you succeed in a KO and no one witnesses it, reputation seems to be fine.

To train Stealth, all my Henry did was sneak around Rattay at night and lockpick doors and chests and KO as many people as he could find. I felt more bad about it as a person than noticing much effect, if any, on Reputation.

Doesn't the person you choke see you? I've read (for example the executioner) reacting badly to the player later on if they were choked out?

Not sure. I dont remember trying the KO on quest giving npc. I have KO innkeepers though, and didnt notice any serious reprecussions.
