Sudden stuttering makes game unplayable
Hi all,

I have loved KCD since it first came out, and I'm replaying it in the lead up to KCDII. I have a decent computer and have never had any performance issues with the game since the beginning. Last time I played it was last weekend, it all ran perfectly, however trying to play again yesterday and today, within minutes of playing the game begins to stutter uncontrollably to the point that it is unplayable. Nothing about my PC has changed nor has the game been updated. My fans are all dust free and other games run fine and I can't see any hardware issues.

Has this happened to anyone else? How did you fix it?

I have a 4090 and 30GB of RAM and usually have no issues running the game on Ultra but even downgrading the graphics has been ineffective.

You could rule out that its your savegame by testing it on a new run...
try setting to Borderless Window, or set Vsync On

there's a known graphics issue with cutscenes and NVIDIA

and definitely try starting with a new run - old save file corruption is not uncommon

free disk space for pagefiling? that's the one thing that could've most easily changed since you last played

Tried this and it does't seem to work which is unfortunate...

Will try this
Exit and relaunch the game every so often, it does help.

What else helps is a custom user.cfg
Make your own using a txt file (renamed the file extension.
Put in root of game folder.
Have game use it by using Steam Launch Option for KCD1 as: +EXEC USER.CFG

Put this in the file:

sys_budget_sysmem = 8192
sys_budget_videomem = 8192
r_TexturesStreamPoolSize = 8192
r_TexturesStreamingMaxRequestedMB = 8192
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyTime = 120
r_texturesstreamingDeferred = 1
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyEnabled = 1
r_TexturesStreamingMipBias = -3
r_TexturesStreamingResidencyThrottle = 0.8
e_PreloadMaterials = 1
sys_PakStreamCache = 1
sys_preload = 1
wh_pl_showfirecursor = 1
r_vsync = 0
r_ssdo = 0
sys_MaxFPS = 999

For the in-game settings, aside from LOD stuff; never set any in-game setting to Ultra.

Stuttering as in constant stutter? Your game wouldn't happen to just freeze for a few seconds every once in a while, would it?
This can easily happen when only having 16GB of RAM too.

Honestly, everyone should have been on 32GB or more, since Intel 3rd & 4th Gen.

Yeah it just seem weird that the game seemed to run fine previously but now suddenly has doesn't

It freezes every couple of seconds, if it was only every so often it wouldn't be so bad but it's frequent enough that the game is unplayable
Are you on Win10 or 11?

Have you changed Drivers recently? If so, maybe double check all of the GPU control panel settings.

Disable or Close background tasks. Avoid running apps such as MSI Afterburner or similar while running this game. Do not use apps such as Geforce Experience or the NVIDIA app for this game.

After KCD loads up into the main menu, ALT+TAB over to Task Manager and change the KCD game EXE to High Priority and Task Manager to Real-time priority. Then switch back to the game.

I'm on W11, I think the issue is related to strain on the GPU/CPU

I've managed to fix it using this tool, at least so far. Usually the game begins to freeze a minute or so in and I've been running it for about half an hour and it seems to work more or less fine. Also disabled Nvidia experience etc

Weird that this became an issue after running the game previously without issue, hopefully KCD II will run okay

Thank you for your help :)
Strain on the CPU/GPU? KCD1 !!!?

Even my old FX8350 + GTX 1080 runs it perfectly fine @ 1440p 40-90 FPS

I've recently upgraded to Windows 11 (clean install) and since then I've been having issues with several games freezing on me (ranging from seconds to minutes to locking up my whole system.

It turns out Turbo Boost is the problem. It's an Intel feature that overclocks your CPU, increasing its performance by quite a bit. Except for me when it's on, my CPU would randomly spike to 100% usage when gaming and freeze. Disabling Turbo Boost fixed it, but also reduced overall CPU performance. I still haven't figured out why is Turbo Boost acting up like this.

Configure the OS properly and tweak it for gaming
