I can tell you rn, objectively speaking, I would not have played KCD as much as I have if it wasnt for QoL mods that made it possible for me to enjoy the game (=

It's a shame that the tools was so difficult to use and mods like that never came out.

True. Essential mods are things like 'stay clean longer', so Henry doesn't look like he's been dragged along behind his horse after riding from Talmberg to Rattay. Also the 'cruise Control' makes it so much easier to ride and not rely on fast travel.

A rather hilarious one was the 'nude mod'. I tested that one about 4 years ago and it was hilarious. It rempved the underwear from women that were running about in said underwear and nothing else, so you would run into a naked wench carrying water up to Rattay or go to the Sasau tailor and his wife was peddling his wares in the buff. Was funny for an hour or two before I removed it again.

The best one ever made was 'Sim Camping' allowing Henry to build a small camp with access to his shared storage. Very helpful in the early game when he can get overencumbered by picking up a handful of herbs.

Most of the mods for this game were made without these tools, I'm pretty sure.
The tools can be helpful though, lots of debug options, good for testing. I have a personal mod that I made where, in addition to making edits to some gameplay formula values that I deemed necessary (difficulty and balance changes and the like), I managed to fix a handful of quest and NPC bugs. It is a proper CryEngine toolset, though, so not too easy to work with without previous experience.
