Though as a newb, i couldnt see the cage and what it was supposed to look like when on the ground. it's not very big, maybe the size of a basket ball.
Agree with both earlier replies. the same button that allows dropping items from the inventory is also used to transfer items to the horse's saddlebags.
a tap makes the transfer to the horse
a push and hold drops the item.
The second is a very rare bug in the cryengine, so not the game itself. The cage falls down and 'sinks' below the surface of the 3D world. In that case you're buggered and can only hope to have a recent save. But that is extremely rare. In 4.200 hours of playing time that happened to me once.
Thise are bugs in the externally made game engine though, so there is only so much Warhorse can do about that.
But i can say for certain that, once the bird was caught, I found the box quite easily and had no trouble picking it up.
