Go up to him and ask to practice with a training weapon until you have your own armor, when you do then ask to use a real weapon so you can mend your armor, clothes, and weapons using repair/blacksmith/tailor kits that will also grind your levels for maintenance.
What I did was that and whenever the Rattay tourney happened I entered, when I started to consistently win I would bet on myself with Peshek, win the tourney, and I would get the few hundred groschen, the piece of armor, and then the bet on top. By the time I actually started the story (I left Hans Capon waiting to go hunting for weeks), I had thousands of Groschen (combined with sales from my occasional camp raids and bouts of thievery), full armor, and high enough skill to take on 3+ enemies at once
It's a literal training akin to irl training.
You fight him - you increase your Warfare, Defense, Vitality, Agility, Strength and chosen weapon skill (I do not recommend maces, because he will use Bludgeon and it has high enough damage to break your gear and cause bleeding)
Training takes time. Quite a lot of it.
Clinch with him, try to do some combos, try to do some perfect blocks (maybe Master Strikes, if your weapon skill already at 5 and you defeated Bernard in combat with real weapons, after which he will have option to teach you it), even just normal blocking his strikes works.
Paid training is another matter, maybe when you have free money - and it's only increasing weapon skill, not attributes - and those matter as much as weapon skill.
Now he wants to train me, idk what happened before, maybe it was because it was not at the right time of day...
I tried to learn combos, i know only 3, one of them is almost impossible to do for me, with him in his combo learning mode, he doesnt defend when in that mode, but it lasts 1 minute and you have to restart it, when i do free fight he destroys me unless i play defensive and try to master strike him (wich i find extremely difficult right now, it seems im not good at timing), the thing is that when in that mode he blocks absolutely everything i throw at him and masterstrikes me instead, so attacking is not an option...
Does clinching with him increases strenght ? if so i will do that for 30 mins so i can get mule II, i really need it since as of right now i dont know whats trash and what isnt, so i carry everything with me or on my horses storage. Im full of flowers and stuff like that that i dont know how to use yet.
I wouldnt recommend combos, unless you're looking for a lesson in frustration. Masterstrikes is what gets the job done. When Henry is maxed out in combat skills with good gear, 1-2 two hit kills are not uncommon.
Yeah, time of day is important. Bernard wont train at night or at his lunch hour. But he's mostly available between 8am and 6pm. Also, he's part of one of the main quest missions which will make him unavailable until it's over.
Yeah, the Mule perks are nice. Strength is increased mostly via combat. Use a weapon with a strength req. Some quests reward a littl str exp, also using a bow will too.
You can dump all the stuff in Henry's trunk at Peshek's Mill. (it's also a container that can be accessed from multiple locations. Namely, the chest by the bed of the Inn Henry purchases to spend the night at.
Everything can be found, there are no unique or rares. So you can sell most of it and get groshen. Herbs can be used in alchemy and making potions such as Savior Schnapps or Poison, which can be very useful. Technically, Henry will need to learn to read first. Super technically, you can find all the recipes online and follow the instructions to create potions without Henry's reading knowledge.
If you're into stealth, then finding clothes with low visibility and noise is important.
If you're into getting your way with speech skill, collecting gear with high charisma is important.
And better weapons and armor are great too.
And finally Blacksmith, Tailor, Armorer, Cobbler repair kits are nice, cuz you dont have to pay for repairs if the item is not too badly damaged. Also, using them increases Henry's Maintenance Skill.
Everything else can be sold or thrown away. I usually check the weight to value ratio of an item, if the value is 50 groshen per 1lb, i might hold on to it to sell later. If it's 100 groshen per 1lb, definitely sell it to Peshek or some other vendor. If the value is less than 50g/1lb it's toss-able, cuz there's just too much junk to be carrying it on Henry's back
Food is also perishable junk, just hold on to a few to feed Henry for a day or two and toss the rest. I prefer sausage or bread.
