Either way - the quest works a tad like this:
You start at the main whatever, then walk past the pond, talk to everyone, and the dude is gone anyway, hinting that he bailed.
So then you gotta find the trail up the street and tadaaa[
Bottom line - walk up to the "street", you'll notice something ♥♥♥♥♥ there, follow it, tadaaa
It's a tad confusing I must admit/spoiler]
interact with everyone (improves speech), and then go find the broken gate by the road
wonder around the area - noting things on the ground between gate and all the folk, and then noting the broken gate itself
then, go back to talk to Bernard before following the trail, to prevent things from getting too buggy
remember to "go back and talk with Bernard" frequently during this quest part
Mark does deserve a new start, but I figure the attack will haunt him no matter where he goes, just as Skalitz haunts Henry.
