When can I train again?
I wanted to train with Bernard in the training arena but he hasn't been there since I did it for the main quest. I've just tracked down ginger and they're trying to send me to Ushitz(name?) to find a man with a limp. I really want to go train my combat, what do I have to do to be able to train again?

It has been like 4 in game days and the trainer is never there. Not sure what the script is.

Did you forget that you went with Bernard to Neuhof as the beginning of that quest? He stays there as part of his investigation of the crime until you progress the quest enough for him to leave.

Okay I got him back. What's the best way to train maces? I opted to use practice weapons but he pounded me into several injuries and broke all my armour. Surely there's a better way than this?

Occasionally Bernard glitches out. Go up the stairs of the upper castle and you'll find him sleeping there. Just talk to him and he'll wake up. Be aware though that he's only at the training area from 8am-1pm and 3ßm-6pm. He won't be there during his lunch break.

Nope. Get yourself some good armour. The bludgeon that's used for mace training is the only practice weapon that leaves damage. Perhaps train the other weapons first to improve your defense and warfare stats. Then he won't beat you inbto a pulp that easily.

Maces are tough because even the practice mace deals significant damage. Quickly while training maces you go from getting beaten and bloody from Bernard, to knocking him out so quickly that you don't get much training in.

Best advice I can give is try to block his strikes with your shield (but not master strikes, that will knock him out quickly) and try to hit his shield, but not be on the receiving end of master strikes.

Increasing your warfare and defense skills before you train maces will also help.

For what it's worth, I prefer to train naked. I take pride in my armour and I'd rather keep it clean and in operational condition. Putting on crappy armour is just a pain in the ass, so to keep it simple, I fight in my small-clothes.

Mace training with the Capt. is particularly satisfying because good ol' Capt. Bernard gets brutalized and bloodied by the practice mace... lol I mean, the guy has it coming after the way Henry gets treated in those early training sessions.

By the time you git gud with hand-to-hand, those fights are just pure joy.

I think Henry is treat appropriately early. The main character is my least liked character so far, kind of an uppidy ♥♥♥♥♥.

Apart from training Maces with Bernard, you can also pay Robard to teach you. And you can also select Mace as a weapon while fighting tournaments for free mace experience without damaging your own/main armor.

If you want to ... hmm, train it weirdly, to say the least, you could use your mace to smash animals. Not my thing but to each their own.

Those are the safest forms to train, then you can always use your mace whenever there is a random encounters, bandits, etc.

I was wondering why choosing practice mace and then seeing my equipment inventory all battered... I thought it was because of hardcore difficulty or something.

I dont recommend getting good armor to practice mace combat. Good armor is hella expensive to repair. Use cheap to repair or throwaway armor.

If you are still paying NPCS to repair your armor, you are doing it wrong. Maintenance still is one of the easiest and fastest skill to level. It makes your repair kits a lot more durable and they last quite a lot. They are also a lot, a lot, a lot cheaper than using NPCs to repair your armor. Specially using haggle.

Indeed, unless of course you're OCD-ing practice, and by the time you're done practicing, every piece of equipment is at 0 durability or can only be repaired by a vendor.
