worst tutorial in modern gaming...
tutorials are supposed to be straightforward, fast and easy to understand. they also need to be a safe enviroment for the player to grasp.
but not in this game
it constantly puts you in situations you inevitbily fail at, punish you for failing them, and on top of that you can't even save the game

could have easily been linear section of: 1 - this is how combat works, 2 - this is how lockpicking works, 3 - this is how fist fights work etc. like all other game tutorials work.

wasted like 2 hours till i finally managed to progress the story past stalitz and then there's even more mountains of dialogues and puzzles of navigating the game enviroment.

Yeah, the tutorials in this game are something else kek. I still have no clue how to play dice, sharpen my sword, do alchemy, and half the things really, i just see a wall of text, read it and go... "Okay! Guess i am ignoring this from now on." I try it out a few times - yep, makes no sense, move on.

My biggest issue with the tutorials is where they're placed in the game. For example: learning how to ride a horse at the onset of what is supposed to be a high stakes chase scene. And the only real combat tutorial is when you eventually get to Bernard, and Henry finally attains the abilities necessary to combat the game's most basic enemies.

The combat tutorial in Skallitz is a complete waste of time, or worse. It gave me a false sense of confidence, since I'm used to more "gamey" games: where the peasant starts out as a level 1 badass instead of as the actual peasant the narrative paints them as. In spite of the mercenary's warning, I full expected to be able to cut down a Cuman or two at least, because that's how it goes in just about every other game I've ever played. The player would have been far better served to not even be allowed to fight.

The opening act of KCD is probably the single worst gaming experience I've ever had. If I wasn't such a nerd for medieval history, I never would have stuck around long enough to appreciate the game's shining qualities.

OP, the combat tutorials ARE in a safe place, and there's two of them. One of them's in Skalitz, and it's even part of the prologue. The other? That's the ENTIRETY of the main quest "Train Hard, Fight Easy". During those tutorials, you can take all the time you want to learn how to fight. The game even includes the Rattay Tourney as an additional teaching tool.
the sword fighting tutorial can be completely missed if you don't talk to the guy sitting next to the market, he is easily missable.
the tutorial for fist fights is not safe in the slightest. kunsh just kicks your ♥♥♥♥ in, and you can't do any rematch without loading to a checkpoint
and then there's the fight with duetch's lads which is again, missable, because not all players like playing with literal ♥♥♥♥. and the fight itself is extremely easy so it douesn't teach anything

realistic melee combat was advertized as one of the game's core and exciting features of this game, but you only get to it after like 2 hours and then you're a weak miserable ♥♥♥♥ that can barely fight a single enemy with a stick

no thanks i don't want to deal with all this garbage. i play games to have fun, and the game's start is the opposite.
gj for the authentic depiction of how crappy medival life was but that's not how you attract players and certainly not how you teach how to play

Game is garbage, only good thinks in this game - story, characters, music.

They should have went the Devil May Cry route.... show, don't tell. Have a small pop-in video and button prompts on the bottom that glow so you see what is being pressed, and a succesful attempt and a failed attempt in the pop-up, that would be pretty good i guess.

That's not a tutorial you "win." You're supposed to lose that fight, because Henry is a weak little man-boy and Kunesh is a brute. This is hard to accept in a game, I know, especially when it literally tells you to go back to Mother and get your boo-boos taken care of.

Man up. Go back and buy the game and learn to deal with failure. It's only a minor setback on the road to badassery.

The game is designed to allow players to experience Henry's story, and Henry is an illiterate, lazy, good-for-nothing who has to scrape himself off the dirt and do it with very little help or prompt from others.

KCD is not for most gamers.

But I love it.

Would have been nice if they said manual attacking is useless and the only way to kill enemies is master strike spam. Combat system is trash.

KCD is not like other games. When you fail, it is not end of the world. Getting beaten by Kunesh is part of the experience! You can ask your friends to help you beat him up, you can ask your mom to heal you. Etc.

The prologue teaches you everything, and it is quite a bit longer than just Skalitz.

Henry has the 'real life' tutorial. The one where he learns the hard way and mistakes could be fatal.
Icedfate Sep 2, 2024 @ 3:57pm
the problem with the combat tutorial is there is 2 separate training sessions with the guard captain guy.
the first one teaches basic moves like slashing and blocking and then stresses the need to attack from different angles and leave the opponent guessing which direction you'r gonna attack from and how you should vary it. . . .

and then throws all that out the window in the next session, when you learn master strikes and you end up having to do those for the entire game.

the :repoop: is that in between those 2 sessions, it sends you on a mission and you have to fight 2 bandits that already know master strikes and you're trying to use the moves you learned in the first training session and getting your butt handed to you with no clue why, because the game never even talked about the master strikes yet.

p.s. that fist fight in the prologue is winnable.
