How do you handle carry load in here?
Got done with the prologue where I mostly walked around overloaded - that was expected, even if I got strength up a considerable amount. Sold off unneeded stuff, left only the essentials - basic protection and clothes, a sword, shield, bow, a little food, a few maintenance kits (small) and maps...and I'm barely below max. Like 95-100 / 113 max even with the first mule perk.
If I get anything worthwhile I'm quite likely to end up overloaded again
Also - the horse at Talmberg bugged out on me and I had to reload and carry on without it (couldn't get out of the stables - horses have a realistic tendency to have issues with walking backwards and trying to maneouver out she ended up jumping into the stable roof. Not "on" - IN, getting me stuck and unable to neither move nor even get off)
so I can't rely on saddles..yet

how do others handle carrying anything beyond the base necessities? like any worthwhile loot?

Get the infinite carry weight mod. I have it set for 1000 which is more than enough to carry everything I own, and with my double saddle bags I have much more.
I feel the limited carry weight is bad in KCD with you having so much loot and loot being so important. I just couldn't handle returning to my chest every 5 minutes, I couldn't get into the game properly.

While I don't have much against mods I was hoping I could avoid such extremes as just "practically turn off this stat". At worst I stashed away a mod that greatly enhances the mule perks. I think it went up to 1000 on the last one, but still hesitant to install it

put stuff on the horse ( you can transfer back and forth between its inventory and your own ) and you can summon the horse to wherever you are with X to whistle for it and it will pop up right next to you so is handy to carry loot back to town. also all safe MARKED save point beds with a chest next to them , the chests are all linked so can be accessed from any of those points.

i manually changed the game file to accommodate more capacity

BaseInventoryCapacity # base inventory capacity

i'm a packrat - more inventory space allows me to better enjoy the game

I´d say if it is not worth your time to travel a lot longer due to being overloaded, just throw away the heaviest, most damaged and cheapest stuff.
Or bite into it and slowly stroll through the lands and enjoy the landscapes, if you really don´t want to let go of stuff. Maybe you find some beautiful mushrooms to pick up on the way. :funkymonkey:

If you don´t use the treasure maps at the moment, leave them at home. Or do one at a time.
It is not necessary to keep your weapons and gear at 100% quality all time. You could leave the maintenance kits at home.
If you plan to come back soon after a short mission or know you will be able to travel through camps/towns/villages, just dont keep more than x2 food and drinks on you. Just eat from the pots when you go through the camps/towns/villages.
It could also be that some armor and weapons you use is just too heavy for Henry at the moment.
If you have plate armor you might leave the shield home or on the horse. Or just throw it away when you want to carry more important things. Shields are easy to come by again.

Picking up flowers, mushrooms and herbs makes Henry stronger and at some point will unlock perks. So does hand to hand combat, which can be done in Rattay as a sidequest (friendly boxing match with some villagers).
There are also books to read that make Henry gain strength. Henry must have learned to read first, which I think is possible some time around or after the Neuhof incident...?...

I wouldn´t mod the game. Not necessary. The weight limit is part of the game and automatically changes depending on how experienced your Henry is.....which differs depending on how you let Henry handle situations and how you train him.
There is no need to unlock everything, win all missions, unlock all perks or max all stats and abilities.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this way.

You have to consider, you play as Henry, he's not terribly strong, wasn't trained in combat of any sort, and yet, you expect him to be able to walk around with a lot of items. Once you start getting strength perks, you can pick the choice to increase carry capacity. Even then, you will struggle a bit with carry capacity. I make a point to drop almost everything into the chest, make sure your horse has very little, then you just make a point to move everything you pick up to the horse. Once you get your strength up to 10, you won't struggle as much.

10 huh? guess I need to grind more herbs and maybe fistfights. Paradoxally the same carryweight is limiting the efficiency of my herb gathering

I don't think there actually is a limit to what you can carry, it just slows you down a lot. At first I looted all enemies, only to find out later you're just wasting your time. Pick up what you like to use, or few expensive items and food, ignore anything else. There are two perks that increase the amount you can carry without being overweight.

In the beginning carrying weight can be an issue if you like to wear full armor. You need to increase your stats so you're able to carry more and reduce the risk of getting overweight when stamina is going down. If you have a horse, store everything you don't need all the time, like food or other items, in the saddle.

Instead of collecting all the loot, rob a tailor. Horse with larger carrying capacity can take it all and immediately go to Peshek to get rid of it, either by selling or put it all in his chest. In this game money isn't an issue. Maybe at the start but once in Rattay it's very easy to get. Or do quests, most of the 'poor' refugees and others do hand out a lot of cash.

you can carry unlimited weight and you will be at your minimum movement speed, be it 500 weight over or 10,000.

As said before and very important, at the beginning in town you can store all your stuff in the chest at your house but it is very important to grab everything before you go to dig a grave for your parents as after that the beginning will end. So you'll want to make sure you have all the items from your chest in your inventory before that. Otherwise everything in the chest is lost. Then you'll start the next chapter with all the items in your inventory.

Some people will use the drunk method of passing out and waking up in your bed to haul heavy loads back to your chest. Pick the right perks, carry the right alcohol, and in some areas you can loot, dump stuff in a nearby container, and when ready to haul everything back home, grab it up, drink until your passed out, and presto you'll wake up with all the stuff right at your bed and chest.

It's not really hard just fast travelling back and forth in some areas when loaded up, fast travel is pretty fast.

Get a good saddle for your horse - they can carry a ton. Some horse can carry more than others - the choice is yours. But as you note, there are limits. It's your choice - for myself I made a conscious decision to live within the game parameters. If I had to leave some loot on the ground, so be it.

Carry weight scales organically with Henry's strength level and strength can be boosted using the "leg day" perk (available at level 10 of the herbalism skill tree). After applying the "leg day" perk, every herb picked adds a small increment to your strength stat.

Another way of increasing your strength (and by extension, your carry weight) is to prioritise the use of strength-based weapons like maces. The bludgeon is a basic mace, so as soon as you can get one, it's useful in some small, incremental way (especially against practice sheep).

Maces absolutely rule in this game, imho. I wish I could enhance them at the forge but I can't, so in actuality I usually opt for axes which are a close second.

Strenght increases organicly when you start picking fights. Just use a sword(not the hunting sword, that one is for agility), axe or mace.
