Do I unlock enough skill points to invest in both longsword and non-longsword combos?
While skills depend on what weapon you use (might go for maces/axes for practicality later on), I haven't invested on a sword technique yet. I wonder between longsword and shortsword, and if I should invest sparingly.

I can't recall by memory, but if you look at the skill description, it'll tell when you'll get skill points. Tally them up and compare to the number of skills, and you'll have your answer.

Also, the Lethean Water potion is a respec potion that will make you forget all your skills and give the points back (+ the most massive hangover), so you can try and experiment!

You do not have enough to get both.

I think you can get all but one combo in the sword tree. It's not like combos increase your strength or make you better in any way like other perks in other trees.

Shortswords/sabers are early-game weapons.
Longswords are mid-game weapons (so are axes).

Maces are the late-game weapons. :-)

Short swords use agility - all the others use strength. Also, strength is a lot easier to level than agility. I've always just relied on upping my strength and just powering thru my opponents. Never concerned myself with combo's and I've done more than fine.

Sword Skill is unique as both short swords and longswords use the same Sword skill, and as earlier stated you cannot learn every combo for both short swords and longswords. You'll have to pick one or the other for any particular save file.

If memory serves, you get enough perk points to unlock all combos except one.

i like longswords simply because i can stab with them, which is their high damage area instead of the much slower swings of chopping, or other weapons. Stabs are quicker, longer range, and give me much more time to respond to counter attacks, and much less time for enemies to block or counter attack. I ignored short swords entirely, too short a range for me.

If memory serves, I never landed any combo in the 200 hours.

Get the 3-hit combos. Don't bother with 4-hit combos. You can only guarantee the first and last hit of a combo, so 4-combos can be interrupted on the second and third. 3-hit combos can only be interrupted on the second so you have a much higher chance to land them.

The first hit is guaranteed if you attack immediately after a master strike, clinch or another combo so it is possible to chain combos.

Incorrect. NO hit is guaranteed any longer, even after successful Master Strike, Clinch, or another combo. This was patched out long ago, enemies can and will still Master Strike you at any point. The final hit of a combo is no longer guaranteed, either.

The problem with fighting and trying to do a combo is that swings with heavy weapons will push your opponent of balance and the distance to them increases. So the next swing will miss unless you step forward, which probably breaks the combo. I tried endlessly doing combos with controller and it didn't work at all, especially when Henry is stronger. What did work though is, slash - slash - spam spam spam spam stabbing as quickly as possible.

Whenever you learn during training isn't working while fighting, except master strikes or blocking. But most of what you're taught only works as intended in the arena because Bernard actually lets you hit him. Which is quite different during free fights with him.

I reckon the last patch was in 2020? I did the 100 combos achievement in under 270 hours of vanilla gameplay (I wasn't trying to, I just liked the spectacle of doing combos), in 2023, and everything I said was observably true.

the only case where henry can't guarantee a hit after clinch, master strike or combo is if the enemy is too far away (some combos or master strikes throw them too far) or Henry stats are so low that his attacks aren't fast enough to hit them during the short period when they can be hit.

EDIT:
I found a 7 months old video that says exactly what I said about combos (except initiating combos from combos, but I still stand by that):
Unless there was a patch in the last 7 months...

The patch was in 2017 or 2018, as it was shortly after I posted my review of the game which included how Clinching gave a free hit. I tested this several times on my last playthrough this year, and found enemies Master Striking me several times after a successful Clinch, with increasing returns as in the more I kept Clinching and going for a hit, the more likely the enemy was to Master Strike me. It's still RNG, whether you're lucky or not.
