That's not supposed to happen. Validate your files and check if your computer meet the requeriments, mess a little bit with the settings so you can run it without problems (specially memory-wise).
About the quest, you follow the dog's barks and meet a NPC, which after some interaction you can get the Spade nearby. With Spade in your inventory and the quest in that proper step, you will goto your former house (now burned and destroyed) and on it's side will be a different tree, in which nearby it you will have a prompt to press E to Dig. It can envolve in walking around a little bit for the prompt to appear.
Yes, not what you want to hear but give it a try. Often at game start a bug can get into the save file and carry forward for the whole game, only revealing itself in certain contexts. I had a non-game-breaking script bug happen in my first play through, but did not reappear when I restarted the game. YMMV...
At least give it a try, remember to back up your save folder, right?
