You are new to this, and that's okay, we were all new once. Know your limitations.
Do not be concerned about missing something, the tourney repeats, come back mid-game when you can beat a host of bandits.
That said, you certainly got the result that an overconfident Henry would have received :D
You are able to win it without much problem in that playtime IF you had trained a little bit with Bernard enough to learn masterstrikes. Which in my opinion is broken in this game. But dont worry, next week you will be a monster and win all tournaments.
Glad you stuck in for so long - and before i forget, i raise a glass to Mac in memory
I sometimes miss him in these forums - he always had a way with new players :))
the NPCs in game do not scale, only the player character (Henry) will scale
so, as other have mentioned, and Bernard has already told you, "You must Train"
an adequate level to win the Tournament as a Peer is around Level 10 in your combat and Warfare skills - multiple weapons too, as you may have discovered
prior to Level 10 peerage, we can rely on Master Strikes ftw - Master Strikes allow you to do damage while only defending - combining "back step often" with "always defend", and it's not hard to win (it just makes combat absolutely boring)
the good news is that once you train up your Henry, and manage to learn the game, then the level of satisfaction and pride in your successes will match your current frustration
i had this same conversation with an old timer years ago - and he ended up loving the game
