Even with maxing out your combat stats, not having a good understanding how combat works will still make combat difficult. Arrow spam, distancing yourself from enemies, knowing when to block or run, poisoning your weapons, and even potions that give you buffs.
But note that it doesn't mean you have all that that it'll mean that you can take do a 1v6 fight with a sword and come out on top like Geralt of Rivia. They'll probably beat you black and blue if you don't play it out tactically and even use the surroundings to your advantage.
Also, expect to get whooped a lot by Bernard at the start especially if you have sh*t armor and you want to learn with real weapons. Learning master strikes will give you a slight advantage later on if you can pull them off.
-Practice, practice, practice. The stuff that Captain Bernard teaches you in the main quest "Train Hard, Fight Easy" is the foundation for everything else related to combat, and PRACTICE is the only real way you'll get better.
-This isn't Skyrim, so don't treat it as if it is. Treating its combat like Skyrim's combat WILL get you defeated quickly.
- Getting better is as much about YOUR skills and knowledge as it is about Henry's skills and knowledge. You need both.
-Keep your weapons and armor repaired as much as you can.
-When your Stamina gets low, fall back slightly and let it regen, because blocking and attacking both require it. When your Stamina's gone, you start taking damage.
-NEVER STOP MOVING!
