Where are all the cumans?

I am playing the game the first time.
So, I am about 3 weeks after the raid of Skalitz (2 weeks unconscious) and one week just hanging around, doing some stuff for Pescheck, save some lives of Skalitzers in Sasau, bought a horse in Neuhof and so forth. I have come around almost the entire map.
I did not start the main quest yet (on purpose!)
But except from about three surprises of bandits and one random encounter of soldiers with bandits, were nothing.. No cumans?
I thought I will meet at least a handful of them, when I travel around.
Are my expectations wrong? Will they occur more often, when I follow the main quest?

They have plently of respawn camps around the map.
If I recall right there at least 2 just south-east from Talmberg.

Are they there yet already or do I need to achieve a certain (main) quest?

Try walking around the Paths around the outskirts of Rattey. I have been jumped by a couple of patrols around the Rattey woods and another on the path just above and leading west of the Rattey mill that you start off in once the tutorial is done.

Those were probably part of the second group of Bounty quests. You get the first group of Bounty quests from Captain Bernard, and he sends you to get ride of bandit camps and bring back proof that you've done so; he'll tell you what he'll consider proof. Second group of those quests is available from Sir Robard in Talmberg, and that group sends you after Cumans. One of the Cuman camps you're sent after is near Talmberg, so you might have come on them by mistake. Hope you kept the helmets from those fights, you might need them.

Why are you even asking about Cumans?

Trust me, they will kill you in a couple hits easy. You aren't anywhere near ready.

Henry is about as strong as a typical lazy white boy of todays young who doesn't work out and barely has the physical strength to do real work outside all day long. You have to spend alot of time building him up. Trust me, there will plenty of enemies to fight, don't you worry. For now it's time to go crying to Theresa and Radzig.

Well, I can gather their ears. And it seems, they're respawn camps. So I am not much bothered.

Well, let that be my concern. I am not so bad at fighting anymore. Henry progresses fast. Gains some muscles and fighting skills in a few days, where others need years. 😄

The cuman leader faceplates are quest items, I dont think you can actually get rid of them once they are in your inventory other than handing them over for the actual raider activity.
They have weight nor value too

It depends when you do it; you wont run into many Cumans very early in the game. Some but most of what you'll find are lesser skilled bandits.

Around the time you get the mission from Fritz and Mathew to hi-jack the coin coming in on a wagon; around that time and beyond you can find plenty of Cumans in various parts of the wooded areas. Look on your Map, look for stalks of smoke coming from the wooded areas on the map. Most of these are un-marked Cuman or Bandit camps. The game will never make a marker on the map for these. Only during various quests where you're asked to collect Cuman helmets. But if you take a break from the Story, you can fight them over and over again. I probably fought off over 1000 of them in my play-through.
