Repair kits & Maintenace

I dont understand how these work

So I learned basic maintenance so I can repair my gear with kits, but its not working

Using a kit on a white condition item says im not skilled enough and on a red it says this kit cant repair this item

So on what I'm suppose to use these kits on to level my maintenance?

at low "Maintenance" skill levels, Hnery can only repair "barely damaged" gear - like around 90%

as Henry's Maintenance skill increases, he will be able to repair gear that is more damaged, without the help of a smith.

a good way to test the mechanic is to slightly damage a bladed weapon on a grindstone, and then use a repair kit to fix it (or only try on nearly fixed gear)

Once you max out maintenance I think you can. I think it's something as low as 60%.
