if you engage them with melee, they latch on and drain ur stamina - and if you don't get them off quickly, it's over. (gotta mash buttons as Terror mentions - it does work).
now, when i hear a dog, i switch to my bow since it sort of forces a glitch - the dogs don't latch on and become static when they attack, and ur not camera locked to them, so u can still move...
So, with the bow equipped, i move backwards continuously, and shoot arrows until they die - early game can require more than 1 arrow, so always plan on needing another shot.
But like save the dodgam game! So many people here getting upset when they lose progress but all you had to do was sleep at the inn or drink a schnapps before you headed out the big city to get mauled by a dog in the first ten mins.
Does it count as a clentch when they sink teeth?
I am not 100% sure, but it does seem to require the same button mashing that clenches do, so my guess would be yes. I had a much harder time getting out of a dogs grip in the early game when my strength was low.
