How to avoid reputation hit in Sheep in Wolf's Clothing?

If you side with the right side and help Hare, you guys get attacked by a group of Talmberg soldiers. I didn't get an option to tell them to F off and so I had to kill them. My reputation with Talmberg plummeted due to this. How can I complete the quest without killing them? Like if I maybe let Hare do all the killing, will I maybe not take the hit?

Also this might be due to the fact that the quest is kinda bugged. I accepted it from the guy at the inn in the glade and not from the huntsman, so I only have Sheep in Wolf's Clothes and not Hare Hunt

I just went after the Hare and left the others to fight them. Sometimes you take a small rep hit but its easily made up as you progress this quest it has a great ending

Ok so if I let Hare and his posse kill the guards on their own, I shouldn't take the hit for "murder"?

If we are talking about the part where you meet Hare in the forest he runs away you just take after him and leave his men to fight the guards.
Dont kill him, you meet up with him at his cave and he will talk to you.
Believe his story.

Lol this quest has a few different directions based on your choices and decisions. If you believe him you will be asked to find proof. No spoiler but you meet up with the hunter. This about the love of a woman lol

I don't have hare hunt, I can't start it either. My game is bugged to where I can only do sheep in wolfs clothes and the only 2 ways I can complete it by killing the guards or letting him die, but then I don't complete hare hunt because I don't have it.

I went back and did some testing. Letting hare fight them leads to him dying and me failing the quest 100% of the time.

However, I tried to punch the guards and ended up knocking them out. They got back up though and charged at me, the 2 surviving poachers didn't help so I ended up killing them. This time I didn't get the rep hit or wanted level

You can avoid meeting in the forest altogether. Depending on your previous decisions and other interconnected quests some options may becone unavailable, there's obviously nothing 'bugged' about that. So you probably needed to go 2 steps back.

It's bugged bc none of the other dialogue exists in my game, can't talk to the huntsman, can't talk to any other npc involved in the quest, can't start hare hunt, none of it. The only thing I can do is ride Hare's ass

As far as I remember there are at least 2 things.
Baptism of Fire is a prerequisite to Hare Hunt. If you haven't done it yet, you can't talk to the huntsman.
Talmberg siege blocks most NPC activity in Talmberg along with some related quests.
There is always a chance of a bug, but I wouldn't just automatically assume this is the case

Ask around the village.
{Optional) Find out what happened to Thomas from the bathhouse.
(Optional) Check out the hearsay about Thomas in the tavern.
Find out what Brada knows.
(Optional) Find out what Blacksmith's Betty saw in the woods.
Explore the clearing where it all went on.
Talk to Jake Piper.
Trophy in the shed.

Question Radan the charcoal-burner.
Listen to Olena’s gossip.
Speak to the innkeeper's wife, Martha.
Find out if Margaret knows something about Hanekin Hare.
(Optional) Meet up with Hanekin Hare.

I sided with the Hanekin as I wanted the Reward you get completing it this way.
Note: siding with Hanekin Hare will remove both "Hare Hunt" and "Sheep in Wolf's Clothing"

Completed the quest. Again, none of that was available to me. I already completed basically every quest and side quest. I looked up guides. None of the ♥♥♥♥ could be done that didn't directly involve one branch of hare's tree

Then it's pretty obvious. When you enter Vranik you receive a warning that past this point some quests might become unavailable. This applies to most quests related to Talmberg.

Funny that someone could think doing the right thing and getting an hit on reputation being something that happens only because of a bug. It's simply life the way it works😁
