Horseshoes
So every blacksmith has exactly 4 of any type of horseshoe in their merchant inventory, so that makes me wonder, do I actually need to buy 4 separate horseshoes to equip? This seems like that type of game

They have different speed and price, assuming you can afford it the military is the fastest ones.

No. A "Horseshoes" item does, indeed, represent a set of 4. Therefore, if one is equipped on your horse and you equip another, the first one will be unequipped.
