If you plan on regularly fighting when outnumbered, you should get the 'against all odds' perk and more importantly the 'headcracker' perk (strength).

Headcracker is most effective when using maces. It often allows you to knock-out an enemy without killing him. They only stay on the ground for about a real-time minute, but that's temporarily one opponent less to deal with simultaneously.

Did I mention you should use a mace? And more importantly, without a shield. The master-strikes without a shield are on average much more effective than the ones with a shield at the expense of defense, so you might take a bit more damage overall.

Third thing: Never stop moving. Best is to move backwards at all times. As soon as you stop moving you'll have one sneaking behind your back and that'll be game over.

Learn how to use combos - some deal high damage and some of good for crowd control. Use bernards training to learn what each combo does for your chosen weapon

I can take some damage with good armor so the mace is best option late game

Have to admit, hate those combos, never managed to pull one off on 1st or 2nd playthru, but game had that major change (new attack dogs) and never bothered to try another. Still, never say never, and love the game and this forum so why I still lurk.

i start 1v2 by swinging, always - this forces the game and camera to lock Henry onto one opponent, asap - then i just focus on killing that opponent first, while side-stepping every couple seconds to avoid being surrounded.

the unlocked opponent may get a few unblocked hits in, greatly reducing ur stamina, so that bears watching - but always stay focused on killing one target at a time. your armor should be able to handle a couple hits - and if not, well, then try to get better armor i suppose.

if the unlocked opponent is using a mace, hammer, or polearm, this technique is very risky, so maybe run away a bit and try to choose them for camera lock first.

and as far as the OP polearm opponents go, i usually run a good distance away and kill them with arrows - even when they're peasants.

and wrt weapon of choice: the axe (and, imo, don't bother with combos)

just spam master strikes and backpeddle. If one of them tries to get behind you try rotating around

You can take on groups of 3 or 4 easily with the right perks and gear (around rank 10 it gets fairly easy). You just have to keep moving and always keep as many in front of you as possible. If you get hit, even from behind, immediately block after, it will usually master strike on their follow up attack.

Part of the problem though, if you get hit hard enough or take enough damage from an attack you'll get knocked around and your camera gets all spinny and wonky. It does get a bit annoying.

Focus on the right enemies at the right times, I'd focus on sword wielding enemies last as they do less damage to you. If an enemy is running toward you, switch to them or be ready to block it as they are almost 100% guaranteed to attack you next.

Maces are great for heavily armored enemies, axes work fairly well too and swords should be used against less armored foes. Though maces and axes work on just about everyone. Swords are going to be pretty weak against heavy armor but are quick to get light armored foes bleeding.

Early on, you want to avoid facing off against too many enemies at a single time and when in doubt just trot around them on your horse till you practice / build up skills more to handle multiples more easily.

Any melee weapon and back up keeping both in front of you, block any attack (even if it comes from the untargeted opponent), a few master strikes will take one out and then go to town on the remaining opponent.

And watch your stamina

A glorified kitchen knife is rather ineffective against opponents in plate armour.

If it is small and gets between the plates....
Or if a blunt knife hits you hard, you'll suffer impact injuries (basically how a mace works)
