Does KCD just have a really slow start?
The story about revenge is all well and good but I just to Rattay and so far I'm just a little bored. Do I get to train with weapons/skills or at least meet npcs I can have interesting/meaningful dialogue with soon?
Of it continues like this much longer I have to wonder why so many people enjoy it.

It's a slow game. You do meet a relatively interesting character or two and have chances for romance nights pretty sure from where you are now

It's a really slow start, especially during early missions and also during combat since you'll really feel that you're a literal peasant when it comes to combat till you get proper training from a specific npc and you level up your skills along the way.

I mean, even with proper training you'll still feel the difficulty of actual 1v3 compared to what other games like to tell you that you could take on the world just because you can parry or block perfectly.

KCD didn't really try to attempt to make it a quick hack em up game, and usually, (I speak for myself at least), I gave the game a "check" first before I purchased it and personally, found the long a*s grind somewhat enjoyable considering what your character was in the story.

I enjoy grindy games and I can definitely appreciate immersion. That's what's missing from most games I've played over the past decade, BUT, there is a limit to how slow a game can be before I start to check out and KCD is definitely walking that line.

Play the main quest line until you finish "Ginger in a Pickle". If you didn't like it up until then, the rest of the game won't likely get better for you.

"do i get to train with weapons and skills?"
yes, bernard in rattay will train you.
don't make the same mistake i did, where i walked away after the first part of the taining. after he teaches you to perfect block and capon challenges you to archery, you need to go back to bernard again and he will teach you combos and "master strikes" and you can spar with him as much as you want with wooden weapons to gain skills safely, without having to do life and death with bandits.
that "ginger" quest has a few challenging foes, which can be beaten but they would have been so much easier if i had finished the training with bernard first before advancing the main quest.

What I usually do for the Hans Capon quest is figure out where the cumans are holding Hans hostage, wait nearby in the bushes until late night when they go to sleep, you can quickly knock one out then stab him to death even without any later game stealth perks, the other one will likely wake up and you can 1v1 him. Besides being easier, this feels a bit more authentic RP-wise since Henry, knowing he is not a great fighter at that time would try to use his wiles rather than fight two opponents at once. During the Neuhof quest, there is another 1v1 in the woods near the stables, then when you find the two bandits hunting Ginger in the Talmberg woods, you can talk to them, pretend you're an out of towner and don't know the whole Ginger story and they will let you get back on your way. Once you've done that, you can go back to Barnard and talk to him and he and the other Rattay guards will help you deal with them. This way you can get through the whole questline up to the Ginger quest without ever having to do more than a 1v1

well, that is how i got past those guys was with stealth kills. i mean, if it was real life, that's pretty much how someone would have to do it. in real life, there's no chance of going up against 6 guys at once and coming out of that alive. not gonna happen.

i didn't think to play dumb and then go back and tell beenard, but then again, that does make more sense to do that

The game is as slow or fast as you like. Right away you can practice being a stealthy b*stard in Talmberg. Once in Rattay you can do missions for Peshek, or just set out on your own to explore. And you will run into bad men and they will invariably murder you. It's freaking glorious. You have total freedom to chart your own course. Go steal a horse and learn how to sneak up on and murder bandits. Strip them naked, sell their crap, rinse and repeat. Do side quests. It's 100% up to you. It's like Skyrim in this respect - you have the freedom to do as thou wilt. And even without Bernard, the more you fight the better you and your stats will get. I once did a run where I didn't even bother with the main quests until I was 100 hours in. I didn't have masterstrike but my stats and gear were quite high. Good times.
