One of the next things I did was walk to Uzhitz to learn to read.
Money was never a real problem from that point on. Be frugal and build on your capital.
1. Do the repeatable quest "Chumps" at Ledetchko. You get to earn XP for bow skill and Agility. But you have to win the tournament to earn the max which is 127 I believe, and 100 gold net. You can start from 8am (in game time) till around 7:30 pm. I didn't count how may tournaments during that time. As you can guess, it takes a bit of perseverance after a few games.
2. You can hunt animals for meat and furs. But unless you have become the master huntman of Talmberg (by doing a side quest), the meat and furs are deemed as "stolen" goods. You can only sell them at the millers or specific NPC who asked you to get them. Since you will mostly be using the bow, so hunting will upgrade both your hunting skill and bow skill though it will take a bit of time.
3. Lastly, this is the most rewarding method. Even at low level, as soon as you get a horse, go to Skalitz. You will see a group, or more precisely, two groups fighting inside Skalitz. DO NOT go in and join the fight. When you enter Skalitz, immediately crouch and turn to your right and sneak forward, following the city wall, until you reach the area when you met Kunesh first. Crouch down and move towards the well. It is best to approach it from the right side of the well. This is to check to see how many people are still there. From experience, it seems that by design of the game, whatever fighting there was, it would have stopped when you get to the well. Usually, there will be at least ONE left. Sometimes, 2. It is now upto you whether you feel strong enough to take him or both of them down. Well, it is easier to handle 2 than 3 or 4, hence the sneak around, especially when you are at low level. I always use my bow to take care of both of them from afar. I upgraded my bow skill via doing Chumps. After killing him or them, loot everything and transfer as much as you can to the horse. If you are still overweight and the horse saddle is full, throw away anything that is worth less than 10 gold. Now, if you are lucky enough to have looted high value stuff, you can store them in the chest in your old home and get back later to get them.
One more note, if you are overweight to a certain level, you can still get on the horse and ride away. However, you won't be able to fast travel. Now, there is a formula governing how much overweight you are but you can still get on the horse and ride.
Depending on the type of saddle you have, the better one carry more. But for Henry, that entirely depends on his strength and perks. To calculate the max overweight Henry is and still allow him to ride a horse. It is the Weight Henry can carry + 50% more.
So if Henry can carry 150 kg, 50% is 75kg. So, Henry can carry 225 kg and still ride the horse. I hope I make sense. Good luck and have fun.
In Talmberg just before you dress as a soldier and leave, you can ask Lady Stephanie for 50g.
The next stage at Rattay, sell treasure maps (if you have the DLC),
Looting the treasure locations. Save these for when your in the area at the time. Some need high level lock picking skill, some don't, some need a shovel. If you follow my guide;
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2236141381
You will pass-by Ancient treasure Map IV, Treasure Map X and treasure map IX quite early on. And these all all graves or easy picks.
Betting with Miller Peshek on you winning the Tournay, and the prize's for doing so.
Overall I make the most legitimate money by following the main quest with pauses to complete side quests. They boost your stats and cash and give valuable gifts way faster than any other activity.
Having the from the ashes DLC and getting an income from a settlement is a true honest income.
If you dont follow the main quest, Henry can hunt and sell meat and sell potions. But the time required against the pay-off is bad.
When I play I don't spend money on much. Only a new horse, repair kits and some food, Inn beds and dice games. I only gather around 30k to get the village in from the ashes on its feet.
All armour and weapons are quest or main quest gifts or looted from enemies I kill.
you can also cook "stolen meat" and the stolen marker goes away. So hunting deers near talmberg or Neuhof, cooking the stuff and selling it is really an easy way in the beginning to get money.
It is true that ALL "stolen" goods will lose the "stolen" marker after sometimes. I believe that will be at least 3 to 5 in game days. Other can correct me if I am wrong. However, I think there is a bug where stolen goods DO NOT lose their stolen marker after even weeks (in game time) as it happened in my last playthrough a few months ago.
But "stolen" marker disappears after you leave the hunting zone, hmm, I am not sure. To be honest with you, I don't rely on hunting to earn gold so I only hunt when I need the furs or organs for completing side quests. Or, when I am travelling, I hunt to earn XP to upgrade the relevant skills. So, I don't bother with "stolen" meat or not. I move them straight to the horse saddle just in case I get stopped and search.
I make my money mostly by looting dead bodies at Saklitz. So, I will get myself the best horse and saddle as soon as I amass enough gold for them. Then I will go to Skalitz every other day (in game time), sort of in between quests.
In KCD, scavenging at Skalitz is really the best and quickest way to make money. And when you max out your bow skill, and also improving in fighting skill, you can use the bow to "soften" them up when they are approaching you at the entrance of Skalitz, well, instead of sneaking around as mentioned in my earlier post here. Oh, more importantly, using bow at enemies' heads has the benefit of NOT causing too much to their armours because damaged armour worth less. I made over 1,000 gold in each visit.
As Philelliscop has pointed out, doing the "From the Ash" DLC is another legit way to make money. Well, a steady income to be more precise. Even the game designer has adopted the fundamental principle of how to be successful in the financial world - you make money with money.
Spending about 2 week (in game) scavenging Skalitz in between doing main and side quests should be the target to save up about 100,000 groschens. I think the figure is around 91,000 groschens to build and fully upgrade the buildings at Perv (forget how to spell the town). Once you have the money, you will complete the DLC and then just go back there to collect your money every few days (in game). I usually go back there every 2 weeks or so.
But to be honest, scavenging in Skalitz is really the quickest and highly rewarding as far as money is concerned. It will be hard in the beginning, i.e. when Henry is at low level. But once you can get the best horse and the best saddle, you are there.
If we ignore looting ?
Looting corpses, and even the more reprehensible looting of graves, as well as looting merchant's and citizen's chests (or goods), is the most common way to acquire merchandise to sell, as well as armor and weapon improvements.
So, how to make money if we don't "Loot" ??? Ever (except for quest items) ?
1. Herb picking.
...- There's about 2000 herbs to pick in Skalitz Epilogue
...- There's 10k+ herbs to pick on route from Peschek to Ledetchko Herbalist
2. Selling Potions
...- Plants and flowers will reset with time - by then, learn to Read and acquire some Recipes
...- Craft and Sell potions, and more potions, and more potions - endless supply
3. Hunting and selling Raw Meat (Looting dead animals? Poaching?)
...- Poaching and Selling the Meat a couple towns over is the most lucrative, "non-looting", way to earn money. This can be fun as a role play Archer, before even talking to Radzig - good bows from Talmberg.
About Traders:
...- Traders adjust prices based on personal reputation - so pick a couple traders and stick with them - their opinion will improve over time and prices will keep getting better.
...- Some traders will resell what they buy from you every night, and will thus have more money tomorrow. Examples are Rattay Apothecary, Hunstman, and Tailor.
...- Some traders do trade at lower prices; the Millers seem to have the worst prices
About Looting:
Not looting is very hard to play - myself and others have tried playing through this way and it's simply hard to acquire sufficiently improved gear without looting. And "Gear" is the issue.
Looting is stealing. Poaching is stealing.
