I have read that it might be the case with top tier horses, but I don't really have too much time for games, so when I fast travel I can go do something in the kitchen for example, I also enjoyed ambushes few years back, and remember that there were issues meeting large enemy groups without fast travelling, and who doesn't like to smack dozen of enemies at once :)
I have heard people say that if you equip Pebbles correctly he/she is perfectly fine for the entire game. I prefer Kanthaka, myself.
Fast Travel cannot be enabled during hardcore.
There is a cheat that will "teleport" the player, but this may cause bugs.
Hardcore by definition means no fast travel. Trust me you won't miss it. The map isn't all that large and you'll discover a whole lot more. Just be aware of your surroundings. That giant windmill in the middle of the map is your friend.
