So start repairing lightly damaged items to improve your skill and move on to more damaged items.
Also, any sword (short, long, hunting or sabre) or axe (but not daggers nor maces) can be sharpen with a grindstone, regardless of its condition. It's a good way to level up your skill at the beginning of the game.
You can even abuse the system by first deliberately blunting your blade with the grindstone (force the edge against the stone until it smokes), then sharpenings it properly (let sparsk fly !), for unlimited Repair XP. :-)
i do this , most the time i can repair everything, I got one of each tool kit on me and spares on the horse. also still use grind stones when i can to help with perk boosts and cleaning off the blood if needed. also a grind stone on things your selling is cheap and effective for a boost in value to not repairing.
