Do I have to use blunt weapons?
I'm still early in the game but I've only been using swords until now. Should I also start training maces or axes?

dont have to. no. You can beat the game just using swords if you like.

But maces are helpful when fighting full plate enemies. Blunt is better then stab or slash against enemies with full plate armor.

Try axes - they give you the best of both worlds. The best axe in the game gives you blunt and slash with every swing, and also does pretty respectable stab damage (which the best mace in the game doesn't). Also there are two perks available in the maintenance tree that apply to axes just like swords - all you have to do is sharpen it on a grind stone and you're off to the races.

My axe looks pretty bad-ass, gotta say.

Axes.

Though, I carry a mace and it absolutely melts everything. Imo late game the extra damage a sword or axe would give against less-armored opponents is barely noticeable, everything without plate goes down wayyy too fast even with maces.

I agree. An interesting thing, though--I went into the last fight in the BOB dlc with a mace. Raven's Beak. And I survived (although no one else in my band did).

But for some whimsical, quixotic reason, maybe knight against knight, I switched to my longsword to face Zoul. All his guys were dead too for this final showdown.

It was the easiest fight in the whole dlc. I'd rather fight with a longsword than any other weapon in the game.

It's that ability to keep them at distance. I tried Magdeburg on the road last night when I got jumped. Things were going bad until I switched back to my axe. Chop chop.

Curious....... do you pack a shield when wielding a longsword ? I don't worry about combo's so I do. I like the additional 'defence' stat I get from my shield.

Well, I have a shield that I use with the mace (or axe) but I never use it with a longsword. Maybe down deep that's the reason I prefer longsword--I can see my opponent (and whatever moves he makes) without the shield getting in the way. I sometimes think that perfect blocks and master strikes are easier without the shield--I practiced mace and axe pretty often with Bernard without the shield.

I don't think it's possible to use a shield with a longsword in KCD. Remember, this is the historical use of the longsword, so it's pretty much a two-handed weapon. You can go sword-and-board with shortswords and hunting swords, but not with longswords.

I may be wrong but I think you can indeed use a shield with a longsword in KCD but you're correct, it wasn't historical and you lose a lot of the effectiveness of the sword.

I never really deliberately tried but I have accidentally equipped my longsword when I had the shield equipped (I was using a mace and shield and switched to longsword... forgot to un-equip the shield) and I've seen this question come up in other threads.

[shrug] In any case it's not a good idea.

Some years ago there was a dance act with a track where the MC would shout "bass in the place London". I often think about it when I take a mace to someones face.

Little bit of side info for you.

Longswords CAN be used one-handed along with a shield, but you won't have access to longsword combos.

However, I don't know if you can use shortsword combos when using a longsword one-handed with a shield.
