grab what you can?
Hi I have a question which came up really early in the game. Does it make sense to grab every item I can get my hands on like baskets of apples and cabbage and stuff? Can I sell it? Will my family die if I rob their entire food supply? Is it even worth picking it up?

If you're in Skalitz in the tutorial phase, not really; save the food for eating, your family won't need it, or rather they won't starve. Moreover, there's only so much coin you can get from Skalitz before it runs out, as the vendors don't refresh their coin supply in the tutorial.

I do recommend picking all the herbs you can, they return coin well enough at the vendors and you get some benefits from Herbalism, like the Leg Day perk at Herbalism level 10, where you pick herbs AND it increases your strength. You don't get those perks just by picking up apples and selling them.

In my experience it isn't really worth picking food up at all unless Henry is hungry enough to eat it straight away. Food goes off so fast you risk food poisoning - I only collect the dried stuff now as it is actually useful.

No, don't bother with picking up all the food in Skalitz. Due to story reasons, there's no point in doing so; you'll find out why pretty soon. There's plenty of opportunities to pick up herbs later on, and Skalitz holds no unique herbs. The only food you should pick up is the stuff that Henry's mother left for him on the table, and that stuff should be eaten pretty quickly because hunger is a thing in this game.

My first (current) HC playthrough, I picked herbs a lot. And punched cows. I came out of Skalitz with 4 main, 5 strength, 10 herbalism, and IIRC, almost 300 hard, silver coins. Which was as good a grubstake as you can get. (I'm sure others have come out with better.)

FWIW.

That said, I agree with what others have said--you don't really need any of it. In fact, I have only done two (?) mainline quests and only one or two side quests and I'm already at 14 main, 17 strength and 20 defense. I have Al-Baraq and 5K gr.

So i may be a little OP for how far (or little) along I am. It will be interesting to see how it plays out this way though.

I left Skalitz on HC mode with strength 15! I win!

Just kidding, it's not a competition...

Had to kill around 600~700 sheeps, that's a lot of sheeps!

ok if you want to kill everyone on act 1 then you should pick every herb in town to get more str , and spam attack during sword train till you exhaust to get more warfare.
if you want to play the game like the dev want you to play, be a ♥♥♥♥♥ and ran away then go a head and do what ever you want, just remember run fast.
but i have to said the best opportunity to engage in cavalry archery in game is the part in act one where cuman horse archers are chasing you, you will not have an opportunity to do horse archery vs mount archery anywhere else in the game. so for that you need to put all starting state in to agility.

If you don't need it, I would recommend leaving most of the foodstuff in the original container. Take what you need to consume over the next few hours, or where you need to sell for immediate coin, but once touched food spoils, so you will not benefit in the longer term by carrying larger amounts of foods, and you lose access to the easily accessible pool of usable food if you sell it all (plus of course, sold items bring in less money than they cost to re-purchase).

And stealing "all of the food" to sell is not good role-playing. IMO.

I do NOT recommend picking all the herbs in skalitz as its needless and inefficient.

Once you hit the regular game there will be tons more herbs to pick at your leisure in much larger groups.

Like many others I did pick enough to get the perks on my first abbreviated playthrough and it was a complete waste of time.

The perks are not needed and its about as unfun and unnatural a form of powergaming gameplay as it gets.

Now, when I play, if I choose, I may pick a few herbs and get the butchers blade and maybe some infinite food and thats it.

Its Organic roleplaying and youll even get the first perk anyways.
I have to disagree with you. Picking all the herbs in skalitz gets you to the perk leg day which then helps you build strength just for picking them. It may not be glamorous but there is a method to the madness. there is a ton of stuff to do before starting the first missions in Skalitz because as long and you don't start the first missions time basically stands still and you get to build strength, stealth, and a number of other important skills. Not to mention if you collect all the herbs you then have a surplus and can easily build up potion making skills as well.

Sadly not. Its a bit like Skyrim, come back next day and all is well. That or they have a great poker face, which kinda spoils it for me.

Just go for the £££'ie stuff.

As a guy who has picked skalitz clean Ill repeat: its a waste at that specific time due to need and inefficiency.

Once you hit the mill and the world opens up there are huge, obvious patches of herbs to pick everywhere.

The true game and, thus, actual combat begins after the mill.
Potion-making doesnt begin until after the mill.

Power-gaming isnt needed the entire game, but, certainly not until after the mill.

If youre so inclined then the smart method is to simply PowerPick after the prologue.

You can achieve what takes an incredible amount of time (wasted) to accomplish in a much shorter time (efficiency) what you didnt need, but now can reasonably use.

One can easily (I did) verify the speed at which Herbalism increases after you reach the mill vs skalitz and the difference is Huge.

Thats why I recommend people never pick skalitz as I did.

Twice:(
WHy put off what you can do now then what you do later. I would much rather have the ability of my stealth , and strength up a lot before I start out into the world. Strength makes it much easier to deal with foes and guards alike and having leg day unlocked before you even start the world is much better than doing it later. I find my strength more important than almost anything else and picking herbs with leg day perk helps in building that. To each their own but your advice is lacking
