While quite unpleasant, don't worry it's not the card destroying itself.
V-sync and FPS limits can mitigate or solve the issue.
I have not had any problems with cutscenes locking yet I do have vsync enabled. What am I doing right?
This problem occurs only if you have a Gsync or Freesync monitor.
So I followed the advice and put a limiter from my GPU software(Radeon). In order to use the fps limiter from Radeon software, I first have to unlock a feature called "Radeon Chill" basically it lower the GPU performance to reduce power consumption. Now my game' performance significantly dropped from average 100 fps to range 40-80. The coil whine stopped tho.
So I decided not to use the FPS limiter from Radeon and just use svs_maxfps command like someone mentioned. I tested the limit in 80, 100, and 120. The coil whine still happens.
At this point I don't care about the noise anymore, I rather have smoother gameplay. But I was wondering if I leave coil whine, will it have bad effect to my gpu, or any downside? This is a brand new rx6800xt and I feel precious about it.
@vine, so maybe I asked that question a little bass-ackwards. What I really want to know is--should I turn vsync off?
What will happen if I do?
I have a Radeon RX580 8GB vram. No problems but naturally I want to optimize performance and "prevent issues."
PS...never have had/heard coil whine...maybe my question is a little OT but when vsync was brought up....

They vibrate and hum under vsriable load. Normally it's in a frequency beyond audible range. But lately, these big powerful boards became quite the orchestra.
Having some is normal. But maybe you'd want to check with the retailer and get it changed/refunded if it's too loud. Might be a defect.
And don't worry, it doesn't mean the board is destroying itself.
