What a terrible way to start...
I am still in the prologue and am already struggling on normal. Wtf kind of intro makes it so hard to even escape the town. Can't access inventory, can't defend yourself, all soldiers run faster than you and cut you down immediately. Can't even get on a horse to ride away without dying like 5 times. I was expecting some time to get used to the game before I was thrown to the wolves.

Great first post. Glad to meet you.

Instead of immediately venting your frustration, take a breath, say your mantra ten times and then try to imagine how many people there are who have played this game and gotten through the intro, and went on to thoroughly enjoy KCD.

Now ask yourself--"Is it me or is it the game?" Whatever your answer, it doesn't reflect well on you.

It took me more than a dozen tries to make it to safety.
But that part with horse riding is made really bad, how to escape from enemies when they are just 1m away from you ?
Stealing armor too - can't stay longer in armory than 10 sec because soldiers hear you and see through the walls because armory is restricted area [and again it repeats later in game, empty house but everyone know you are lurking inside]
And first lockpicking training with Miller Peschek we have after we did our first burglary .
So yes, beginning in this game is a bit too short.

Hello OP, I'm gonna talk to you about my personal experience with this game. The RPG / action games I usually play are easier than KCD, the hero is "OP" by normal human standards, Witcher 3 for example and the gameplay is not that hard even on the hardest difficulty. So first time I tried KCD everything seemed too slow to be, I wanted to get cool armor and weapons and become proficient at fighting ASAP, but it took me way too long by my standards.

I too found myself at the wrong side of the law because I attempted to murder Kunesh at full view of a guard who started chasing me around, got sent to jail and died there.

But eventually I learned to appreciate the slow pace of the game at the beginning and I'm sure you will as well if you take your time with this game. As for escaping the Cumans at the beginning, it's not that hard if you let your horse rest a bit. Don't force it to sprint even when it's exhausted because it simply won't and you'll be shot to death.

Also if you ever become accustomed to normal mode, I recommend trying hardcore. The lack of quest markers and combat markers is a bit annoying at first but you get used to it and learn to appreciate the more realistic gameplay.

I did make it eventually but it was very frustrating. I just hope I will eventually have some time to relax and practice soon before being thrust into another situation with no input of my own. Also its definitely the game lol, having barely learned the controls and talked to a few people before your village is burned and you are being murdered by high difficulty enemies isn't what I would call good game design and by the look of the other post here it seems to keep this steep learning curve and zero leeway for failure up in the future as well. I would like to enjoy the game but if their way of making things artificially difficult is this prologue it doesn't bode well. I like games with dialogue trees, I like the setting, I like being able to improve skills, make character builds, the combat (what i have experienced) seems unique, so this game should be fun for me. Hopefully I feel better about it after some time with it.

You'll have plenty of time. You just need to slow down and not expect things to be the way you want them to be.

Henry is a teenager. He knows nothing...like most teenagers...and he has no skills. Zero.

Once you make it to Talmberg, there is no time constrain and no one trying to kill you.

Most of us rush out to do quests and so forth. But there is no hurry take time to explore.

And most of all, think. The whole game is a puzzle--practically, mechanically, and even ethically. It's a challenge. For you to solve...or not.

That's what a good game should be.

After prologue the game will open up to you and you can (and should) train as much as you want, and then some more. You will probably know the point when to do so. Do not rush it, think before you do. One of the first things you should do upon receiving your own horse is to learn to read. This will open Alchemy to you as you can read alchemy recipes, and potions will be available as source of money and a way to approach many quests from the peaceful side, if you wish to, or strenghten you up for a fight. Also brewing Saviour Schnapps potions for saving as much as you want. I strongly suggest passing first playthrough without mods. There are plenty of mods that help in some ways, but you should not look at them until you're done first time.

Good advice

The first time playing I too tried to fight the cuman that follows you when you start running down from the castle, but then I realized the quest is called "Run!" for a reason.
And yes, the horse part would have been nice if the game had paused for a moment so you could read the instructions instead of a popup in the upper right corner while you're getting attacked left and right... but eventually you escape and can breathe again.
Over all I think it is a very good start because it really makes it clear that you'll have no chance against any skilled fighter, let alone a war hardened cuman, without propper training and leveling a few skills.
So like the others said, take your time and I hope you'll enjoy it just as much as we all do.

It's actually quite simple. First off make sure you're not overloaded while trying to run. Get on that horse fast. After that, simply put her on cruse control. She knows the roads on her own. You just have to get her to giddyup as often as possible. The only time you have to 'steer' is at the left turn to Talmberg.

Again - take nothing but your sword, don't even look at the Cumans and let the horse steer herself. Just get as much speed out of her as possible.

AS for stealing armor in Talmberg, when Bernard wakes you up in the night telling you to come to the wall, there's your chance to rob the place. If you miss that chance, go at night and check how much noise you make.

You can also just make a run for it and sweet talk the guard in the town itself; doing it at night you can stealth past them if careful. Do it right and he let's you go. Orrrrr............... get thrown in jail. They'll chuck you out of town then lol.

Stealthing past the Talmberg town guards at night would be a neat trick, since time stops at noon that day until you escape. ;)

Cumans run from me now. It's actually an issue.... I have to get my dog to chase them and take them down. My my how times have changed. Only gangs in plate give me issues now. Early in the game ? Ha ha ha...... I'd get ripped to shreds by a few raggedy goofballs in the forest armed with clubs. As people keep on preaching - it takes time to gear up and get your skills up. Which makes it worthwhile.

I did it while supposedly guarding the wall at night after Radzig rides by. Wanted to prove that it was possible. It was. Easily. However, I reverted to an earlier save as I wanted to steal more stuff first. Then I knocked out the guard, escaped thru the moat in daylight and talked to one of the guards patrolling the town. He let me go. Alternatively one could go counterclockwise around the castle and head to Rovna that way.

The devs have given us multiple ways to pull this off, because it's critical that we DO pull it off.

I'd say stop considering and buy it, imo you can't do anything wrong, guessing you're here to check out if it's still buggy or something? Because sure, there are still bugs and armor clipping and what not, but it is still a great game too.

Ah what a nice thread to go back and experience this game. The prologue was certainly a shock starting off. I mean a lot of us saw A woman getting attacked by cumans so we wanted to be the hero as it literally tempted us to be. And then we got destroyed so fast. I mean even the 1 guy chasing you will kill you in a very short amount of time. Its very much of a throw you into that action quick.

I certainly can get the hate since it comes as a complete shock, but the more I played it the more I understood how necessary it was. This is a hardcore game even in normal. This is old school in style and something that is completely different from most modern games so that intro does a good job at indroducing you to the game. It lets you know what kind of a game in a very blunt and upfront way.

Stay with it and be slow. Also DO NOT TALK TO NIGHTINGALE UNTIL AFTER YOU DO MORE TRAINING. i will not say more as that would spoil the game, but that is one of the points where you actually get a string of quests that do have time constraints. And with how this game is, if you do not actively do the quest the quests will be done without you if you do not persue and training up your skills is an important part of the game. There is no indicator in the game that you will not be able to train after that trigger until after a certain point in the quest line which can be way too far. Many of you know what I am talking about, but I will not say it here since I do not wish to spoil anything. Just remember the name NIGHTINGALE and once you see him that you should stop moving forward and take that time to train if you would like.
