using keys

I usually find up to two keys while pickpocketing sleeping shopowners or even normal citizens, but I can't find a use for them, is there any feedback that tells you are using a key or some different icon that replace the picklocking one?

How does the keys mechanic work?

When you go to open a Door or Chest for which you have a key you will see a prompt for "Unlock" in addition to the usual "Lockpick" prompt.

Regarding pickpocketing keys off of people, or looting them off dead bodies, they will say "door key" vs. "chest key" in the inventory screen. But I know of no way to show such distinction while attempting the pickpocketing.

Ok, is it correct to say that if I steal a chest key to a merchant it should open a chest in his shop or in his house?

Yes that's the idea.. if you know whom the key belonged to, you can go rob them. Often though you collect keys and then you wander around and see hey i got a key to this, where did i get it, hmm? That's my case mostly, anyway.

ok, if it happens guards catch you and retrieve stolen goods do they find stolen keys too?

no, keys are added to keyrings, and i think even groshen are not confiscated.
edit: simple rule if an item in your inventory or on horse has red hand, it can be confiscated. guards search your horse (saddle) as well so be warned. the only safe place to clean stolen mark is chests in your rented inn rooms or rattay mill.
