I figured it out - see my edit. I hadn't bothered to let him fully explain what the topping out was, so the dang quest wasn't actually IN my quest log. No wonder I could put 50 arrows into it with no results lol.
HA ha - having said all that, I'm going back to spend some time shooting monks from the scaffolding and then seeing how many guards I can take out. (Maybe Bob Geldof will write a song about me.) Sasau is beginning to get on my nerves again....... evidently they haven't totally forgiven my last murder rampage. I was hearing all sorts of snide and snarky remarks at my expense last night while shooting dice. Time to teach Sasau some manners again.
LOL - three playthru's as a virtuous Boy Scout. Time for a change. Quite refreshing, actually. I never realized how the game really does change around you according to how you behave. Also the freedom to p*ss a town off and then gradually get back into its good graces is fascinating.
I believe Daniel Vavre was involved in the old 'Mafia' game. There's a scene on a rooftop where the protagonist mows down cop after cop as they come up thru a stairwell. I'm reliving that scene right now at the top of the scaffolding at the monastery, as the guards climb the ladder to get at me and I'm plunking them with my bow.
