I think that is the trigger. If you want to see it happen, try doing that.
I don't doubt that's true. It just never occurred to me to do the blacksmith quest out of turn. I don't think I ever saw it in the quest log until after the tourney and him confronting me on the road.
How did that come about? I was under the impression that it was triggered by Henry killing Black Peter himself.
After looking over internet at the time, it seems like you can only enter the tournament after starting the quest. However, I was able to enter the tournament days after I got to Rattay, very early into the game, and to some it's considered a bug. I'm not sure about that part, but the fact is I was never accept the quest before nor after (no dialogue option) BP died next to the ring.
I played through the tournament and had to face him at the end, so apparently he was reincarnated! Anyhow, I lost to him because he beat me 2 out of the 3 bouts. I can try him again. So winning the tournament quest can still be accomplished.
If you had Black Peter die next to the ring like I did, try waiting with the Herald until the next tourney. It worked for me.
The Dead Man's quest for the tournament can be done one of two ways by design;
You can enter the tournament without visiting the Samopesh smith - once you defeat Black Peter in the tournament AND at the ambush, you can visit the Samopesh smith at any time in the future and run through the dialog, with the last dialog option completing the quest.
OR-
You can visit the smith first, then go and do the very next tournament, defeat Black Peter twice, then again, at your leisure, go tell the smith all about it.
The nice part is that there is no longer any 'order', as you'll trigger Dead Man's quest in either case.
It used to be that the tournament didn't trigger until you visited the Samopesh smith or Hans Capon, as he also has a quest for Henry and the tournament. Now, the tournament independently starts about 7 days after you visit Rattay the first time, I believe, and there is no requirement to enroll in the tournament, it just cycles over on its own schedule every 7 game days.
Apologies if y'all know this stuff already, but I thought I'd lend some verification to the experience.
God be with ye.
Thanks.
And with you.
I actually have never missed a tournament after getting the smith's quest, so it's a good question.
I *think* that the quest progression doesn't trigger until you enter a tournament, but this is just a guess. One thing you can watch for is a quest failure notification specifically for Dead Man if you miss the next tournament, so you might want to check your quest log to be sure you haven't failed it. If not, then you *should* be able to skip the tournament until you're ready.
Let us know what you find out.
