Armor Durability - Gambeson gets destroyed super fast

In my current Hardcore Build im wearing the following armor: (1. Dark Saxon Gambeson [55dura], 2. Some dark 1armor jacket, 3. Dark Brigandine, 4. Dark cloak.) Im doing a med armor stealth build (~30 visibility/30 conspic / 10 noise).

The problem is after about taking 3-5 hits my gambeson goes down to ~50% durability and i can no longer repair it without using a merchant. The rest of my armor takes less than 5% durability loss, but just that gambeson gets ripped up and it takes about 150g for repairs.

Is there a way to protect the gambeson's durability better? Why does it get shredded 10x more than my heavy armor on top of it? How do you guys handle this problem? I guess i could just unequip it and go for a combat jacket in slot 4 once i find a good dark one.

If you're getting hit with a mace or warhammer, this will happen to the gambeson since it's primary purpose is to diffuse blunt damage.

I noticed you're not wearing a hauberk or mail shirt under your armor, so it seems the gambeson will take a lot more damage from other attacks as well: the hauberk or mail tends to also diffuse damage before the gambeson does, so that's probably a contributing factor.

The combat jacket is the top layer so you can keep your gambeson equipped if you find the dark combat jacket out in the world: head up to Skalitz, there's a profusion of bandits up there, one of them will likely have one.

I'd also recommend having a spare tucked in your trunk, so if one gets torn up, you don't have to wear subpar cloth protection until your next visit to the tailor.

Yes and no. Padded armor by itself is surprisingly good against slashes, but behind mail/plate, it becomes blunt padding.

Huh, usually my Hauberk is the first one to go.

I remember that the Warhorse Gambeson seemed to be thrashed very quickly in my first playthrough, which isn't an issue early on bc the low value of the thing makes repair of some very good piece of kit costs literally less than a groschen.

That's the one you're using?
