How often should i feed my dog?

In my opinon no collision shuld be in base game when in combat

I'm so tired of all the bugs in this game. I just spent 10 minutes feeding him and praising him over and over again. I went through 15 smokes sausages, 10 bacon, and about 10 roast chickens, and i praised him between each one. They were fresh because i stood in front of the butcher i bought them from and immediately fed Mutt. This got his obedience level from 17 to 50. So i think my game is bugged again. This sucks because i use him all the time, but i can't get him to stay with me for more than a couple minutes anymore.

Ok I feel stupid now, apparently it takes time for the level to go up. If I feed him a fresh smoked sausage, it takes about 2 minutes for his obedience to go up by 20ish points. I'm standing here just jamming sausages down my dogs throat, screaming "Why won't you love me!!!??"

chasing a rabbit firing arrows at it while it constantly runs away and serpentines you, trying to aim the bow off center, while it is shaking all around while the rabbit is constantly moving is the most frustrating thing i have ever done in a video game.


meanwhile, i can just tell the dog, "hunt!" and he goes up to it, kills it and brings it back to me. . all stiff as a board, as if it was taxidermied 3 months ago. .but yeha, much easier way to kill them.

deer are even worse, because the run from you from even further away, forcing you to take extreme long distance shots and they bound up and down and move really fast, but again, just tell the dog to Hunt and he can take down a deer by himself. he can't bring the deer to you, but that's an impressive feat for a dog. i dunno if real dogs can run down and kill a deer. .

that alone makes the dog worth bringing along.
also at 8 houndmastery, you can learn the "Sic em" command to get the dog to help in combat.
the game does say that the dog can get injured though and run away and then you have to wait days for him to come back, beut that hasn't happened to me yet


as for the question of how often you "need" to feed him. i only feed him once a day usually, and his obedience hovers between 80-100. probably best to feed him at least twice a day.

keep in mind, there is a cooldown period before you gain more skills.
you can't just feed him 20 meats at once and powerlevel it.
you gotta feed him once, and praise him, and then wait a bit before doing it again.

as for the dog always underfoot, yeah, i feel that too. when i'm trying to pick a plant and the dog runs up and makes me activate him instead of picking the plant and then the dog starts peeing on the plant i want to pick. . .

It took me way too long to realize there was a cooldown on feeding/praising. still trying to figure it out precisely, but i'm not freaking out about super low obedience, i got the perk to raise his obedience when he does return after leaving. He got hurt in a fight i had when i was retaking the skalits mine with Ulrich. I came back and saw mutts obd. was 17 so i ran to the butcher and spammed meat and praise, hoping to get him to 100 quickly. i did level up my houndmastery 4 times though, so you do get skill from feeding every time, just not obedience.

Mutt is one of the most annoying things in the game. When you're picking flowers in the middle of a field he always runs around your legs and blocks you. He also always blocks doorways, howls the whole night when you're sitting in bed or grinding on alchemy skills over the night, fetches already looted rabbit carcasses, ruins stealthy gameplay, etc. etc.
Oh and boinking his head with a mace by mistake when fighting is also annoying and most likely lowers the obedience, so I wouldn't put much work in maxing it out. Just pick up the obedience perks that make him return faster or give additional obedience after returning and you'll be fine. He'll run away after every camp raid or "men at arms" highway patrol encounter because of 1v1'ing someone while you're fighting others anyways. In the end, there's really no need to give him much attention apart from RP.

Bro Mutt can solo anyone that's unarmed and chase anyone down that's running away.

If they are armored, he distracts them so you can get an easy hit in.

Mutt hunts animals for you and essentially feeds himself and makes you money by just killing rabbits.

Mutt is OP as hell.
