Like a lot of this game, you have to learn skills... earn skills... but once you do, what you do with those skills is still up to you. It only ceases to be a challenge if you quit looking for a challenge. It's only boring if you let it be. It's all in your attitude.
Yes, you can sit back in the tourney and Master Strike. You can be defensive only--that's an historically correct tactic. And most of the time you will win. But eventually the AI learns and it adapts... even if you don't.
But you could... if it occurs to you... practice combos and feints in the tourney. Practice positioning your blade to hit the opponents legs and then shoulders all in one offensive chain. Practice your timing.
Did you know that there are keys ('K' and 'L'?) that will allow you to spin 360 degrees? Kind of awkward on the keyboard and I don't know what good it would do, but the AI does it occasionally.
I am nearly 600 hours into this game, once on normal and now on Hardcore. On hardcore the AI is better and hits harder. I have over 30 tourneys under my belt and have never lost. But I have lost individual bouts trying new moves and being on the offensive. Especially in HC, even with all weapons and combat stats at level 20.
Not boring, still a challenge. It's all in your attitude.
Also, I hotkeyed my block to my mouse, and haven't gotten hit since. I couldn't block at all when using Q.
Same experience here. Same solution... "great minds," and all that.
And, it's worth noting/repeating that spamming the attack keys (or the block key) generally messes things up entirely. It's like you are overloading the AI with too much input and it can't keep up. I don't think that's technically true but that's the effect.
Timing is everything in this game.
Anyway, by participating in the tournaments even if you get beaten up at some point, the good thing is that you learn some combat XP without having to put yourself in danger, better even than training with Cap. Bernard because if you have really bad luck there's a possibility for you to die in training, in tourneys you just can't die.
Well, you can't 'learn' new techniques from the tourney. Only Bernard can teach you Master Strikes for instance. Even if you know the theory (or are playing the game for a second time), you still have to 'get' master Strikes from the Capt.
On the other hand, if you train a lot with Bernard, your armour will get damaged. And while that's helpful in learning a habit of maintenance and in gaining experience and skill in maintenance, it is also sometimes hard on the purse.
Doing the tourney, if it's just practice or xp that you want, will not see your kit damaged. You're not even using your own armour or weapons.
You have to work and work, and the main thing is to use what you've learned in real combat. There's nothing better than experience, believe me.
Huh, im playing hardcore and beating the tournament was easy, even without master strike. and im lvl 6, warfare 3.
Good on you. Just goes to show... people who complain about the tourney/combat are pissing into the wind.
I suk at combat but I win and like I said, I have never lost a tourney (30+).
