casting lots
I have small problem. I starting Casting Lots as part of the AWL DLC quest. Johanka gave me this quest and I am ready to drink with Ambrose. Fortunately I have a save there.

Here's my problem: I only have 4xp in drinking (I do have the Beer Bibber perk), but I don't seem to be able to get Ambrose drunk enough to agree to play dice with me before I pass out.

I've tried several times at various levels of consumption and he declines to play dice every time I ask. If i try to max the drinking, Henry can't handle it.

So I fail the objective of getting him to play.

Is there any work-around or am I just destined to fail this quest.

And if it fails, what are the consequences?

PS... my pickpocketing xp is maybe 2.

If you pass out drinking then you fail the quest. You can still continue on with Johanka's quests though. Which may affect Johanka's ending. You get an achievement too.

I'm not sure of all the options in the quest. All I have done is got him drunk and stayed sober myself and passing out failing it.

Go to some tavern and drink like no tomorrow. Drinking can be leveled up very fast with enough digestion and Hair o' the Dog potions. After your drinking skills is above 10, you should be able to pass this quest.

2 runs i tried to fail it for the achievement but i was to skilled in drinking. The current run i didn't drink anything until this quest starts and i got now the achievement. Normally it's very tricky to fail this quest. So load an old save and go drinking a bit until you start it again -lol-

Thanks for the replies, lads.

But what am I missing here?

I thought the objective was to win his money and hand it over to his wife. It sounds like you guys are telling me that what I really want to do is fail. ??

No, if you not willing to fail you have to train drinking -lol-

@Mac -

Your drinking skill may be too low, so before you take on this one, do as above and 'practice' your skill, get some books (available in taverns), and try to get it up around 10.

Alternatively, during the quest, you have choices that indicate the drinking amounts, (1, 2, or 3 little shot glass icons next to your choices). Select the least amount you can.

Also, make sure not to select every dialog option during the drinking round (i.e. don't select 'about the meaning of life' one) - ask him for a dice game before the last dialog option, and he should be plastered just enough to agree.

Hope it helps.

But... but... I am happy to fail it--I never did like the over-drinking bit in this game (didn't get drunk with the priest this play-through), but I don't want to screw up Johanka's quest either.

I guess that's really what I'm asking--what are the repercussions if i fail. someone mentioned an achievement for failing??

It will affect Johanka's ending. Most likely won't get the good ending for her.

Well, dern. I didn't finish Johanka's bit my first play-through, partially because I had heard or read (probably here) that it didn't end well. But did Theresa's bit and so i thought I'd complete the dlc with Johanka.

Looks like I'm going to have to fail this and take a pass on the rest of the quest too. [sigh]

Don't pass on this quest - go back to your save before ambrose, get to about 10 drinking, and then have that drinking contest, then win at dice.

I think you'll appreciate Johanka's story as the trial develops, and you'll be able to save her. Check back here when you get stuck.

Seriously, it's some of the best DLC content in KCD. Don't miss out.

You still should continue on whether you fail this or not. You will still get an ending for her. Not to mention some decent quests after it.

I can't save her though, can I?

I mean I know it sounds a little weird but in the back of my mind, i figure that if I don't pursue the quest, it can't go forward to trial. So, implicitly, she survives. Maybe dumb but as i rode of with Hans at the end of my last play-through she was still there, at the monastery, ministering to the sick.

[shrug]

I saved Johanka with the best ending while not getting a positive testimony by Ambrose's wife. I was lazy to reload. AND i did not have good standing with the Vicar because i did not do Waldensians quest. With the right choices in the trial speech and with other positive testimonies, mainly that Von Berg dude admitting to forcing Johanka, and Johanka herself backing down on her fervor, these are core elements in the trial.

So all in all you DON'T need every possible positive support. Just enough of them.
