changing weapons?
In another thread someone said something about being able to change weapons in the middle of a fight. Is that possible? How do you do it?

Sometimes , esp. early on, when I would get unhorsed, I couldn't even pull my sword --I could hit #1 on the keyboard several times and nothing. Meanwhile I'm trying to fightback with fists. Eventually the sword comes out but by that time I am dead or dying.

You can definitely change between melee and bow during combat. You cannot, however, access your inventory, which would be required in order to change melee weapons, e.g. to go from sword to warhammer.

Just as at any other time during the game, pressing 1 causes Henry to draw his melee weapon. Pressing 2 causes Henry to draw his bow.

But, drawing the weapon takes time. Not much time, but while Henry is getting pounded, it can feel like a long time. So, if you are impatient, you will find yourself pressing 1 repeatedly.

This will get Henry killed.

Repeatedly pressing 1 will cause Henry to draw and sheath his main weapon. He'll never have it ready and in his hands. So you just have to press 1, and wait till you see the weapon in Henry's hands and ready to use. Don't panic.

Getting unhorsed is a special situation, because Henry gets stunned and can't do ♥♥♥♥ all for a few moments. Meanwhile, the player is tempted to spam 1. This does not help the situation when Henry eventually regains his senses.

The best remedy, is never to get unhorsed (usually fatal), and to always have Henry's weapon at the ready before the fight starts.

Open your inventory and equip weapon you want. You won't have to pull it out only if your previous weapon was ready.

Maybe I'm just easily amused but that's the attraction of RPG--it's so immersive I do panic.

Heck. I can perfect block Bernard dern near at will but in a real fight I can't even see the 'green light'.

You can - only changing armor and drinking potions isn't allowed, and only when golden swords icon is shown

So how do you change weapons and are you protected against assault when you're in your inventory?

Yes, when you're in any of the character menus the game is paused.
You equip them just like you do outside of combat

Ah, didn't realize that!

Oh, bandages also is definitely disallowed when in the combat state.

Very interesting...as if I'll remember that in the middle of a fight.

So...if you are in the middle of a scrum, and you have a sword equipped and are swinging it, can you access your inventory, equip a mace and when you escape the inventory the mace will be 'in hand'?

Or do you have to deliberately sheath the sword and pull the mace...all while Cuman are hurting you?

It isn't *strictly* paused. Time flows at 1/1000th (1/67 of real time) of normal (15x) in character or inventory or map. Which is *effectively paused* as long as you don't assume it is and wander off to do something else and get on with whatever inventory swapping of weapons you need to do.

Leave it alone for an hour, and around a minute will have passed with you standing gormlessly being beaten on.

So, OK...get in and get out. Got it.

But again, if I have a weapon drawn and am fighting bandits for instance, and decide I want to switch to another weapon...I enter inventory equip the 'other' weapon (which will effectively un-equip the first weapon) and then exit inventory, what's my status? Do I have a weapon in hand or not?

You remain in the status you were in *Bow in hand* *Melee in hand*. You can add or remove shield, or torch (though torch is also over-loaded onto 'press and hold "1" to take out or put away (removing any equipped shield in the process).

If you go in empty hands, then you will come out empty hands, and need to ready your weapon. If you go in with a longsword, and come out hammer and shield, then you will have this in your hands.
Go in bow in hand and remove the bow, and you will have empty hands.

Be careful with crouching and switching between bow and melee, you can get stuck unable to use the weapon. 'Jumping' or "noticing you are crouched" and standing up will fix such a stuck state (as will unequipping and re-equipping the items in the menu). It is possible to toggle crouched state while mounting/dismounting and/or riding, which can cause a problem. But... This is most often a problem when failing at stealth and going to use melee instead of the bow... it is a trivial thing to fix when you know it can happen and how to resolve it.

Thanks, that helps a lot.

I didn’t realize you could access inventory at all while the yellow swords were there. That makes things a bit easier when it comes to having some weapons poisoned, just for that special occasion.

It also raises the question, why isn’t there another hot key to switch weapons.
