Can't complete "run" quest at the beginning of the game
I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't complete the "Run" quest that probably ends the introduction to the game. I can get onto a horse and begin cantering out of town which starts the cut scene of Henry riding out of the village and getting hit in the leg with an arrow. As soon as I regain control of Henry he immediately falls off of his horse, and there are three enemies on horseback about three feet behind him. I have him re-mount the horse, but he gets immediately thrown off at which point he gets skewered by the enemies on his heels. I've watched videos of people just running away on horseback and getting an objective to find help. I'm not sure what I'm doing differently. I have tried starting the quest over several times but I can't get a different result. Each time that cut scene ends Henry is immediately thrown from his horse and can't get back on.

I had same thing happen once but I fixed it by loading a save game from before the attack. Could always try to load the save from running down from the castle and maybe avoid helping Theresa, pick another horse.

That did the trick, thanks for the suggestion. I loaded back to the previous quest before the attack begins. I didn't do anything differently, but suddenly I stayed on my horse and the chase began properly.
Not helping Theresa is a very bad idea. The key is understanding how little you actually have to do to help her. Running within earshot of the rapists and whistling (pressing x) should be sufficient..

Much more difficult (and important) is figuring out how to ride a horse. You mentioned canter, so you're halfway there. You need to remember two things: 1) you're going to be pursued by horse archers who are better horsemen than you are and are often travelling at a gallop (so if you try to do the whole run at a canter they'll catch you, and if you try to do the whole run at a gallop you'll wind up in a ditch and they'll catch you); and 2) your horse is smarter than you are and won't land you in a ditch if you give it its head when you round a bend.

What makes this a bit awkward is that Henry's horse riding skill is close to zero, so you need to avoid situations where people can take a whack at him and unhorse him. The other problem is that at this point in the game the player's horse controlling skills are probably comparable to Henry's, so you're very likely to go too slowly and get unhorsed and caught, or too fast and wind up in a ditch (and get unhorsed and caught).

Plan on taking lots of deep breathes and repeating this part several times, because rescuing Theresa and stealing the horse is the easy part. Some people say they got it on the first try. That may be, but I'm not one of those people.

If you have to repeat the prologue multiple times just to have a chance at success, the game devs failed. End of discussion.
