Is a friend Indeed quest help

[Mr. Self Destruct]

So I'm doing the quest to check on matthew and fritz. Apparently, looking at the wiki, I can pickpocket Thomas and find something that Jane would be upset about. I pickpocketed him, but I can't talk to Jane to show it to her.

So the only way I can complete the quest is the most direct ways, agree to have matthew and fritz leave, or beat Thomas up. Is there a bug here preventing me from finishing it, or am I missing a step?

Nope, I picked the scarf off him and showed it to her, he then made a beeline for the exit.
The follow up made it seem like we beat him up though.

I reloaded a save right before I initiated this quest. Something must have broke for me, because what I was missing was the second conversation with the Miller, about his son, that progressed the quest where Jane became interactable, and she talked about the scarf. Something must have not activated the first time around, because the Miller wouldn't talk to me after the first interaction.

But it's working now.
