Longsword vs shortswort?

The shortsword allows you to equip a shield but I dont get hit that often so a shield isnt really necessary for me, but maybe a shortsword has some other advantages over a longsword? Also I know maces are good against armor, but what role does the axe play?

Swords do more damage to lighty armored. Maces are anti-armor. Axes are kinda "jack of all trades"

You can use a longsword with a shield, that why it's also called a bas tard sword.
I cant really say if there are any advantages with a shortsword?

Longsword can be used with shield as well

All in all there's different combo moves, might be the biggest difference.

use longsword, it is the best and does the most damage and you can still kill full plate armor opponents with it if you stab them in the eyes where they are vulnerable. and longsword has more combo's

Also, whats the fastest way to level up maces/axes? because when I go and fight bandits with them I get destroyed because my level is so low with them!

Buy a better axe would be my advise. Also use shield.

the difference is if you use longsword with shield it will be less effective

I like shortswords better. You can slash faster and do the same damage (if you have a good sword). Of course the range is a bit shorter but it's not very noticeable.

long swords can be used with shield, although by doing this you are forfiting any combos for long swords.
short swords with shield are better because u can do combos for short swords

combo's cant be used with shields.
