Like you said, it should've been explained better. There are quite a few games where you're supposed to be beaten. I do get that they didn't want to do it in a cutscene, since that would just make the player feel like they didn't have any control over it and possibly ruin the experience a bit.
The best way they could have handled it if they started the fight real easy. Runt would allow the player a few hits to land, but his armor clearly blocks any damage it would do. Then Runt should say something like how futile this is, since even if you beat him, there are 4 others. When the player gets knocked at then, it's a lot more obvious it was inevitable
What? I totally disagree..
Having the chance at hitting him and doing 'damage', just goes to show that you "can" beat him. and almost defeats the purpose of the fight, and the threat..
Henry isn't a 10 year old, swinging his fists, while the bully holds his head back, out of reach of his arms. Herny has a sharp sword. Runt has no helmet. You do not fight at 50%.. Ever. (in games, it's different, and for theater, you play it up for drama.. but this wasn't much of a drama fight)
How were you suppose to know that you weren't able to beat him? He kills you in less than 15 seconds, at best, on your first encounter A cutscene players right after that. and further continues the story with your savior, keeping you alive.
The only time this becomes an issue.. is when you take 6 hours to try and beat him. Maybe that just comes down do not having the 'gaming literacy' to see it, but 6 hours?
You should of reasonably stopped at the 4th try, maybe?
After 2 near-instant deaths, I managed to get a bit higher ground and he wasn't able to get to me right away. I got some hits in, and it seemed it was possible.
Just because a fight is very difficult doesn't automatically mean it's litteraly impossible. There are games which give you the option of fighting a very difficult enemy near the start. Those games don't expect you to win, but if you do, you get handsomely rewarded in some way.
When the curscene played after I died to him the first time, I immediatly tried to hit escape to reload a save, and when that didnt work, I quit the game to reload. I didn't know whether this games had branching paths, and I didn't want to get locked into the path where I lost that fight.
I did stop at the 4th try, but only to google the answer. Good game design shouldn't require the player to progress by either giving up or looking for the answer elsewhere.
I'm not saying my solution was perfect, but as it stands, it's unclear that this fight is litteraly unbeatable
